Hello all,
I'm brand new here. I tried searching previous threads first, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I know that there is a device that can be used to pull a bullet from a live casing. However, is there a way to safely render a live round dead, while keeping it's integrity for appearance purposes? I want to be able to display a couple rounds in a display case i'm building for my late father's service revolver, but I don't want live rounds in there with it, just in case.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

buy a bullet puller, looks like a plastic hammer, pull the bullet, empty the powder, and replace the bullet... that should be effective enough, you could discharge the primer prior to replacing the bullet, but that is your call...

I am sure there are other ways that would be simpler... but this is the best way to prevent damage to the bullet or case... no problem...

pull bullet, dump powder, fire case/ primer--reassemble
even a primer powered bullet can do damage,

if you really want to get the primer out and don't have a set of dies, you can take a small diameter nail and use STEADY pressure to force the primer out from the inside of the case after pulling the bullet and dumping the powder.

Man I wish I had the dies for 38 and I would send you a few. I would ask around and see if anyone local reloads and ask them to make you a few rounds. If you needed 45 (the only setup i have right now). I would polish you up a few nice casings, seat some used primers in the casing and put you a nice bullet of your choice in there and mail it to you. Maybe someone will offer this up. I mean yes you could buy a bullet puller but if your never gonna use it again, its kind of a waste.

Once you dump the powder shoot a little WD40 in the flash hole to kill the primer before you reseat the bullet.

I can think of several creative ways to "kill", but that would lead to some real controversy..:neener:
easiest way would be to remove or discharge it. if you are going for the look of an intact cartrige, it is unlikely that someone is going to be looking at the primer of an intact cartrige.

What caliber and which bullet are you looking for? Maybe one of us can make you some dummy rounds to display. I have done it a few times for others and if it is a caliber I can do I would make you some. Let me know if I can help. :)

I reload .380/9mm/.45ACP myself and could supply you some of those. PM me if the revolver takes .45ACP

Just a thought, most of the others have given good advice on this. Although were it my display I would like a primer in the hole, preferably detonated.

If you want this as a display, polish that brass up real good, then clean it with alcohol, and spray it with some type of lacquer so it won't tarnish in the case.

If it were me, I would also drill a hole in one side of them so someone doesn't mistake them for live rounds at some point in the future.

Save everyone a lot of trouble.

If its a .38 or .357 and you would rather do a couple of dummy rounds I might be able to help out there. I have brass and nickle cases. Send me a pm if I can help

Soooooooooo, what is the problem with having a live round in a display case? It won't go off by itself and outside of a gun, it isn't dangerous.

Seems like a lot of monkey business for nothing.

Safety issues include the fact the weapon (it is still a weapon) and live ammo could get you into trouble if there are kids around and the display is not completely secure. I think the OP is on the right track here.

Well, I read the post, but I did forget that the pistol would be in the case with the pistol.

Still, sooooooooooooooo what. He is making the case. Make the case so it locks with thick shatter-proof glass. Heck, throw the key away if you want. It would be a good, "Break Case In Case of Emergency" thing.

pistol in the case with the pistol.. ha.. I can see what you are saying... if it was me, and I didnt have kids in the house to worry about, I would probably opt to do what you are talking about... I always thought the wooden hinge cases with the red velvet backround looked pretty cool...

There is my point again. It is still access able, unlike a Gun Safe. Of course, you would have to secure your ammo to ensure that the latter works.

If you haven't gotten what you need let me know.

I wish I had read this yesterday. My brother just headed back to St. Louis this morning, may have been able to send something your way.

No, I don't see the point. If a child is old enough to get the thing off the wall, break the case, and load the gun, that child is old enough to teach not to do so.

Let's quit dumbing down this society and our children. Let's hold people responsible for their own actions. Let's stop the lawsuits for places serving hot coffee and us spilling it on our laps. And let us stop it here on this forum.

Please allow the retort. In a perfect world, I would agree with you. But I don't live in a perfect world. We have heard the term peer pressure, haven't we. I am not dumbing the society or our children but s**t happens.

How you got this and turned it into coffee spilling is beyond me but I guess this is called different strokes for different folks. you have your opinion and I have mine and I still think that the OP has the right idea.

Now... End of Discussion.

Get a spent primer, remove the anvil find a small steel dowel that is the same size of the primer cup, and tap the firing pin indentation flat, then install it in your dummy round and seat the bullet.

The point is it's the way he wants to do it and that is his right. Lets let other people do things the way they want to and not have to do it our way.
