OK, has anyone ever taken the FSB off of an M&P 15? Mine has been a royal pain in the butt to remove; the taper pins aren't budging one bit, even after making some cheesy sight blocks out of wood to try to hold it steady and covering the area of the pins in WD-40. I need it removed so I can chop it down and install my Troy TRX Extreme 13" rail (So please don't suggest buying a $35 Brownells polyethylene sight removal block, I could just have my local gun shop do the whole install for $50). I think I'm doing everything right, hitting on the small side of the pin. Please help!

i recently removed the fsb on my colt. make sure you are hitting the pins in the right direction and use the right size punch. have it on a solid surface and don't be afraid to use a BFH. the pins are a bear, but they will come out. removing these pins was the most time consuming part of the recent rail install i did.

Other than trying some heat (you may need to go high enough to melt plumber's solder) and a good penetrating oil (which WD40 isn't) I can't think of anything else to try as long as you are sure you are really driving them from the small end.

The trick to removing any tight pin is:
1. It must be supported on something hard and heavy, (like a steel block or small anvil) so nothing can move when you hit it except the pin.
2. The punch must be stiff enough to have no give to it.
A tapered nail-set punch is what I use to start them moving.
Once you break the taper bond, they should fall out.

Here's a link to a post I made a while ago on the S&W M&P Rifle forum, on removing the FSB. As others have said put the barrel on a solid surface and use a Big hammer to start the pins out. Also use a punch that is wider than the pins so it doesn't slip off and mar the barrel.

I changed my sport to a RRA freefloat tube with no frills . Pins tapped out fairly well on mine with out any real pounding needed. Drilled a couple extra holes in my old blocks for use with the sport .

I just used a 3/32" pin punch and a small hammer. I used my leg for the anvil. The pin came out easily.
