Got myself a Benchmade North Fork, only thing I don't like about it is the black pocket clip. I want it to have a polished stainless look - whats the best way to go about this? Acid, wire wheel, vinegar?

*EDIT - also, would the griptilian / mini griptilian replacement pocket clips fit the North Fork (are the hole patterns the same?)? I see some for sale on Ebay, I may pick one of those up instead if they are compatible.

Thank you.

Call Benchmade Monday and tell them what you want.
Pretty sure there will be a free one in the mail the same day.

They have sent me enough parts over the years to almost build another knife!

I have used paint stripper to good effect. On a Spyderco clip and a Benchmade clip. I forget which is which, but one was fairly polished looking already under the coating. The other one had a matte finish and required some time with sandpaper to get it where I wanted it.

Through the years, Benchmade and others have used various black finishes.

I have some early ones from when they were in the Birdsong Black-T coating phase on blades & clips that started wearing off and scratching as soon as you started using them.

Any decent paint stripper would remove it.

More recently, they have used actual bluing, and also Black Oxide

Today, some companies are using DLC (Diamondlike Carbon) which is nearly indestructible.
And certainly impervious to any paint stripper or solvent.
And even very difficult to polish off with buffing wheels.

But Benchmade still also offers standard blued, Black painted, Black Oxide, and Silver.

Best contact Benchmade and get an uncoated one sent out like I said.

Idk, but that Benchmade clip of mine certainly was not blued. A dozen or so minutes in the stripper and the "paint" peeled right off. This was recently. A 710 purchased about 6 months ago.

Like I said, they still offer black painted.

But the one on the OP's knife in the photo looks more like black oxide, and paint stripper won't take it off.

Like RC said, call and ask for a clip in the white.

I will echo this...I got my arrowhead clip for free a few days after my request.

Straight from their website:

Carry-Clip Requests

If for some reason, your carry-clip gets lost or damaged, and you need a new one, contact us for clip requests. Please include your name, ship-to address, and the knife model(s) so that we can better assist you.

It's a moot point because you've found a better solution, but for those who are interested, "black oxide" is the same as what we call "hot salt gun blue" and you can easily strip it with many toilet bowl cleaners that are acid-based.

That doesn't look like black oxide to me. You sure it's not bluing? Plain white vinegar will strip bluing to bare metal.
