Removing flash hider on PTR-91

I have a new PTR-91, post ban with an "A2" style flash hider. I want to put a muzzle brake on it.

Does the hider just screw off? It doesn't appear to be welded or soldered on - and there is a metal "clip" or "ring" of some sorts on the hider.

It's definitely tight, however it's on there.

I just got the brake in the mail. Should it have come with some sort of crush washer or something?

Turns out the "clip" was just acting as a sort of detent to keep the hider from walking off. Although it was VERY tight, I was able to turn it off.

I was nervous I'd mess up a new rifle - but all went well.

I added the handguard rails, the bolt on handguard clamp that eliminates handguard movement, and the muzzle brake.

Also got 1920 rounds of S.A. 7.62 from AIM in the mail. Today was a Good Day.

From what I understand (and my PTR-91 isn't here yet so I can't verify this first hand), the metal clip on the flash hider you're talking about interfaces with a set of grooves machined into the barrel. The clip friction-fits into the grooves and keeps the hider from coming off. All you should have to do to remove the hider is to put the flat edge of your sling clip into the slots on the front edge of the hider and rotate it counter-clockwise. It should snap past a few of those ridges, then thread right off.

The brake does not said clip - so once I decide I want to keep it on there's I'll have to Locktite it or something.

Keep that flash hider. You may not be too happy with the muzzle brake after shooting it.

I had an AR-15 with a Mini Y Comp brake. Couldn't stand shooting the thing because of the blast deflected back toward me.

Oh yeah - I'm keeping it. I've wanted for some time to try one of each on a gun, and this is it. The brake was only a little over $20 ... so we'll see.

Shot it today. Didn't get a chance to compare with the hider, but I found the rifle very pleasant to shoot with the brake. Not sure how the folks around me felt about it, but I liked it.

What a great rifle. It definitely "feels different" than it's gas-operated counterparts. I didn't measure group size or anything, but I hit the paper from the first shot to the last with SA surplus.

The rifle is awesome.

Removal of FH

I was able to simply unscrew my FH. I'll be replacing it with a MB in due time. My PTR-91 was purchased in early 2009 and SN is AWxxxx series.
