Removing paint specs from a wood stock?

If that's regular household interior latex paint.... I'd just lightly use my finger nail.

Should come right off.

That.
If it's Latex paint it should fleck right off with your fingernail.

If it's older enamel house paint
Hand rub with 0000 grade Super-Fine Steel Wool and lemon oil furniture polish.

A slight variation on rc's method for if it's oil paint.

Apply the lemon oil or even some cooking oil and allow to sit for a few minutes so it has time to work its way under the spots. Then brush at the spots fairly vigorously with a plastic pot scrubber pad. This should do the trick with no risk of dulling the finish underneath like steel wool would have.

If it just won't come off, I'd probably eventually try dry scraping. As lightly as possible, with the smallest burred edge tool I could find or make, trying to take nothing more than the paint itself, and hopefully stopping before removing the surface of the original finish and/or wood.

If you do happen to dull a shiny finish Flitz will bring the shine back out. I have also used Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish to brighten up acrylic. Do test on a small less noticed area first!

0000 grade steel wool & lemon oil won't dull the finish.

I have used it on finished stocks for years.

I too agree with RC, as I've used that technique numerous times, on firearms that have come my way. No sense in scrubbing the dickens out however, just enough force to remove the paint, and use the lemon oil to replace the shine.
