I own an el cheapo phoenix arms hp22 and can't stand all the safeties!!! So far I have removed the prong that wouldnt let me switch it to fire with the magazine out, and removed the prong that wouldnt let me release the mag on fire... I keep it in my back pocket and am finding that during the installation and removal of the handgun from my back pocket, sometimes the top firing pin safety gets put on safe.

Is there a way to remove the top firing pin safety and not affect the funcionality of the pistol? Will just removing it somehow mess up the firing pin mechanism or have any antagonistic effects?

Thanks in advance!

removal of safety

Don't remove or disable the safety, if there is ever any accidents or a shootings you will be fair game for the police and any attorneys. Besides who wants a el chepo in there back pocket w/o a safety. Save a few $$$ for a better gun.

Don't ever remove any safety. Before retirement I dealt with plantif's attorneys. As stated above don't. If you do, do it yourself and don't tell anyone. For 1911s, there are instructions several places on web. Moderators are foolish to leave them posted. Beware. [email protected]

There are videos on youtube that tell how to remove the safeties.

And aren't Glocks famous for not having any safeties ?

LOL, I know this is an old thread but it still comes up on Google :)

The firing pin safety consists of a rotating pin with a lever attached and a V-shaped spring. The V-shaped spring is supposed to make the safety lever stay put in its current position, but it's not very effective. So even though the firing pin safety is the only way to make this gun dropsafe, it doesn't really make the gun dropsafe. :) The only way to make this gun safe for carry/storage, IMO, is to make sure the chamber is empty.

BTW, the frame mounted safety on this gun only blocks the sear. But the sear is cast and that little stick that stops on the safety looks like it can realistically snap off under heavy pressure. So I doubly wouldn't rely on it, either.

To disassemble the slide, you need a small SAE hex bit. I forget the exact size, but it's tiny. That little "rivet" in the little steel plate on the back of the slide is actually a worm screw with a tiny hex socket in it. (Yep, it's amazing there's a tiny machined steel screw here, when the rest of the gun is held together with roll pins and a couple phillips heads. :)) Once you remove that, the plate can slide out. From there, the firing pin can come out the back. It's just a piece of sheet metal with a couple notches cut into it. Also, the V shaped firing pin safety spring is exposed on the back of the slide and can be removed. I don't actually know how hard it is to remove the firing pin safety lever, itself. By the time I figured out how to disassemble all this to clean it out, my firing pin safety had already been pinned to the frame.
