Replacement for Unique

I am still new to this.. Finding the best, most accurate, most WOW factor powder has been an effort at times. I bought an 8 lb jug of Unique and do not really care for it.

I tried AutoComp. It shot well but was the dirtiest powder I ever shot in a pistol. I tried min to max loads and all my guns were just caked with the heaviset layer of soot I ever saw.

So, next payday, I am going to order a pound of Power Pistol, Universal, AA#5, and AA#7. I am going to try these next.

After all, this is my new hobby that I love doing and experimenting with. Sometimes, I spend hours at the bench and totally lose track of time.

The High Road members and their input has been invaluable. I thank you all for the help.

Power Pistol meters great and burns clean. However, I only use it for jacketed and plated bullets....For lead, I use nothing but Unique. Heck, I could use it for all my handgun loads if I had to. It also burns pretty darn clean when you pump it up to magnum pressures.

I've always had issues with my Uniflow metering Unique charges of 6.0gr or less. Above that it does fine. I switched to Titegroup for those smaller charges. It meters perfectly and I use less to boot.

I like Power Pistol as well, but, like ColtPythonElite, I only use it for jacketed rounds.

Trick is to be consistent in your operation. I like to use a powder baffle.

Make sure you are using the small rotor cavity in the Uniflow.

I'd give the baffle a try and see if it smooths things out a bit. If I remember correctly, they don't cost very much... maybe $10 or so.

Not being confrontational but my experience with AutoComp wasn’t as described in the quotation.

I can't stand Unique. If you live nearby, you're welcome to take 6500 grains of it off my hands. :)

Universal Clays, btw.

My vote is for AA#5. Sounds like what you are looking for. Produces hotter rounds and is dirty, but not overly dirty. I felt that AA#5 from a recoil standpoint was some of the hardest recoiling powders for a particular caliber than I have ever used (my opinion probably best represents the recoil aspect of SD rounds, minus mussel flash). I thought that AA#7 was pretty dirty, maybe one of the dirtiest powders I have used, but they were all from short barreled guns. I would second Universal as well. Good metering powder, medium-medium-heavy recoil). I am running the same set up as you with the RCBS Uniflow.

Just a side note, I love regular old Clays (has a clay pigeon on the can), but for all of the reasons you are not looking for in a powder. Low recoil, clean, but produces good velocity. Until I get to try VV powders, I have to say its the cleanest powder I have used in my 45ACP's and 40 cal's. Just throwing out the other side in case you wanna venture there.
