Buddies Super X2 3" is slowing down. Best guess is in need of a new action spring due to powdered rust around action plunger thing (the part the bolt sticks into that actually tops the spring).Hosed it down with CLP and got it cycling ok again, turned action upside down wow the red stuff ran out.
I said just get a standard replacement spring from Brownells. So my buddy asks me, can I do it and I think I can, but what am I getting into here. Have a vise, basic tools torch and limited guntinkering experience, installed a trigger, front sight, recoil pads etc. bolt-on-off stuff.

And is that all we need just the spring, or is there other parts easier to exchange when installing then use the old, or prone to breakage. Any tricks to make it easier, or pitfalls.

thanks in advance!

If it's cycling properly when it's fired, then I'd just give it a good cleaning and leave it at that. By good cleaning, I mean stripping it down to the last screw and pin. If it's rusty inside, that's never happened. As to disassembly, it's not hard. If your not familiar with the inner workings of guns generally, then reassembly can be problematic.

More than likely the rust is from the action spring tube. To answer your question it is pretty simple. Remove butt pad, unscrew hex stock nut, pull stock, knock out pin at rear of tube and replace spring. A rusty tube can be difficult to replace as they can be rusted right hard into the receiver.

Clean the inside of the tube with a bronze bore brush on a short section of cleaning rod, solvent, & a cordless drill.

All 3 good answers thanks! I believe a new spring is coming, I talked him out of a surecycle as overkill. So he's wanting something replaced does the same thing with broadheads every season or 2

any other suggestions to ease the job are welcomed thanks!

added Sunday: also, since I've elected myself for this task should I grease the new spring first or install dry. My first thinking is a firearms grease application to the spring

thanks

My X-2's action spring was very short. Then new one really helped out!

Spring is cheap and easy to install. Keep track of stock spacer.
