A few weeks ago I posted here with some "should I?" questions on a Dan Wesson .41 mag I had a chance to pick up. At the advise of you fine folks I went ahead and got it and as promised here is the report.

We checked it over at my dealers, he knows handguns better than I. The pistol is in very good condition and shows very little wear. Chamber gap is tight, cylinder lockup is positive and tight, and trigger is very nice. Initial impressions were that it is one heavy handgun and pleasant surprise that the grips fill my large hands well.

I shot around thirty rounds or so through it when I got home. No serious bench work or anything like that but it seems to shoot very well. The wind was very strong, but using a rest I had no problems keeping them in "minute of a deer" at 75 yards. I'm sure this will prove to a very accurate pistol when I do some real bench testing and get some practice in with it.

I shot a 2 liter pop bottle filled with water at 75 yards and the 175 grain Silvertip hollow points did an impressive job. I only shot offhand out to about 30 yards but again I was surprised at how easily hits came.

Recoil was very very light. The gun bucked but by no means could you concider it uncomfortable or distracting.

The only delima I have found with this gun is what sighting apparatus to use. It came with a red dot that seems very nice but covers up alot of the target at longer ranges. I have a Leupold 2x handgun scope that I could replace it with. I'm sure it would aid in precise aiming but I worry that it will be to much of a hinderance in close hunting situations. Any advise here would be appreciated.

Other than that, it looks like its time to link up with a friend with a reloader and start cranking out some ammo.

Take Care,
Matt

DWs are nice. I've been looking for one for several years. The Silvertips are really mild loads and for hunting you should step it up a bit with a heavier bullet. I've always hunted with open sights, but my eyes aren't what they used to be. The scope would be better for hunting as some red dots disappear in certain lighting conditions.
You should really like your DW. They are very accurate revolvers.

BTW...don't worry about the B/C gap on the switch barreled DWs. You can adjust that yourself. You did get the tool with it didn't you as it does everything on the revolver?

Sounds pretty typical of DW revolvers, very accurate. I have a red dot on one of my pistols in 22 long rifle and it is fine for short range work and target shooting. I too have been in a delima over scoping a 44 Magnum, mine being a Ruger Super Redhawk. I got the Super Redhawk because plenty were available and DW's are extremely rare around here.:(

I have an old Tasco (Japan) 3X30 pistol scope that I have considered for this 44. Any opinions?

Majic,
Thanks for the advise on the Silvertips, I'll probably be reloading so I will deffinately be looking into some heavier loads. The Silver tips came with the gun so I'll shoot them up and go from there. I think they will be fine for small game up to coyotes with is first on my list of critters to whack with my new toy.

Stans,
Try it and see how you like it, that way you can tell me. I would like to try the leupold but don't want to remove the red dot to do it. Maybe I will just have to buy a new gun.

Sounds like a great Hundgun! Congrats! Do you have pic capability?

I use Win 210gr Silvertips in my RSH for hunting. They do a good job when hitting bone and are the most accurate round I have found and, I think I've tried them all?

You might try a smaller MOA dot in your dot scope. I hit jugs at 75yrds with ease. I occasionally shoot at 100 yards but not much, I have very little opportunity to get a 100 yard shot where I hunt with my SRH. Matter of fact, 50 yards is pushing it. I might have to pop the AimPoint off and put a handgun scope on it. I have never tried it with one, I assumed it would be too shakey and pi$$ me off, LOL. I also figured they might be difficult in low light, opposed to the bright dot?

Marshal,
I too wonder if a scope is going to make think its too shakey. I will check into changing my dot size. I have no doubt the gun is capable in better shooting than what I have reported. When you concider that I haven't shot a handgun in several years, the wind was blowing darn hards, and I was more worried about shooting than actually hitting- I am tickled with how things turned out.
We will see how things progress as I shoot more.

Is the red dot mounted on the barrel shroud? If so then just order another barrel shroud and install the scope on that. Then all you have to do is switch the shrouds to suit your purpose and re-check the zero. That's one of the versatilites of the DW design.

Majic,
To answer your question, I don't honestly know. I know there is a weaver style rail mounted to the gun but I don't know how its mounted. I will have to check on that.
Matt

Just look to see if the base is mounted on the frame over the cylinder or farther forward on the barrel (which is really the barrel shroud on a DW).
