I can see the reason to report stolen firearms. I certainly would just for a personal dose of ‘CYA’ in case they were misused. What is their obsession with having the report made within 48 hours? Please pardon my ignorance but what am I missing here?

Can someone tell me why this is a bad thing? I assume it's 48 hours from when you discover them missing, so if I return from vacation and my safe is open, I report it.

Why would I NOT want to report my guns as stolen and release myself from liability?

Just curious, so don't flame the hell out of me, please.

I don't think the objection is that is SHOULD be reported, but that it is MANDATORY that it be reported. It's just another government intrusion into your life, and with the 48 hour period, it turns the gunowner and victim of the theft into a criminal. It makes owning a gun more of a hassle, and eventually, no one will want to do it. That is the plan.

Let me tell you why they want to force you to report a stolen gun within 48 hours.

If the cops want to confiscate your gun, like when your ex-wife claims physical abuse to get a better divorce settlement, they can show up at your house and ask for it. You can say, "I don't know where that went. Lost it in the desert years ago."

If this becomes law, you're now a criminal for not reporting the gun lost or stolen.

That and the eventual confiscation at the end of the registration road. At least they can get you on something, if they can't prove you have a gun they can prove you DID own a gun, at some time, and if you can't prove you sold it legally, you're still going to jail.

It just proves they're planning for the long-term. :uhoh:

Come on dude, you think they would be reasonable with gun owners? It is X hours from when the legal owner SHOULD have known they were missing. Do you want to play that game with the government?

BINGO!

It's another of those laws that sound totally reasonable until you turn it around the other way.

Sure, you'll report it if your guns are stolen. But it also means that if you didn't report it, your guns can't have been stolen. So you're guilty of [insert whatever].

I'm having a helluva time [1] getting a licence to posess more guns. Because someone else stole one of my guns.

So yea, you guys are going to have these little, totally reasonable, infringements, which any law abiding fellow would have no problem with, it's OK, it's for your own good [2].

48 hours? Not in Michigan. In Michigan one has to report missing firearms immediately.

So, it's not only stolen firearms, but missing firearms as well. So if my house burns down and destroys all my possessions I need to worry about keeping the local P.D. informed or risk jail time?

The reason they want the mandatory report time is to help eliminate "straw purchases", NOT for insnane reasons like ArmedBear came up with. You can put the tin foil away now.

Straw purchasers will buy and illegally sell a handgun. Said handgun will then be used in the commission of a crime and be recovered. Then when the handgun is traced back to the purchaser, they'll say something like, "oh that gun, well......it was "stolen" yesterday, last week, last month, etc.....and I, ah....er.....just didn't feel like reporting it."

If your firearm is stolen why in the world wouldn't you want to notify the police???? It has nothing to do with your firearms being destroyed by a fire. You'd report your car stolen but drag your heels when its a firearm?

Soooooooo.....what's to stop a "straw purchaser" from buying a gun, then reporting it stolen after he sells/gives it to whoever? Seems like that would be a smart thing to do to "CYA" anyhow if you were to engage in such activity.

EXACTLY!

Now, let's replace "reporting a stolen firearm" with "quickly taking my hand OFF of a hot stove if I touch it."

Why WOULDN'T you take your hand off a hot stove fast if you touched it?

So, why do we need a law to MAKE us do it?
