I start my sophomore research paper tomorrow and I decided to write about gun control. I am of course writing about how we should not have gun control so I guess it would be a pro gun essay not gun control. My problem is that I have to write about at least two cons and I am having trouble comming up with them. Anyone have thoughts on the cons of allowing people to own guns? (I already asked and I am not allowed to not have any :banghead:) The other thing is any links to usefull websites for pro gun/anti gun control information you could give would be usefull.

I can give you three. Firearms are not safe in the hands of people who are inexperienced, irresponsible, or mentally unstable. The same can be said for automobiles, alcohol, and numerous other things no one is trying to ban.

You could look at the cons of totally unrestricted access to guns for EVERYONE. Although criminals and the mentally deranged still get their hands on guns, no restrictions at all would just make it that much easier for them.

For starters, here are a few:

* Crack Cocaine & Guns do not mix well.

* Gangs & Guns do not mix well.

* Hip-Hop Clubs & Guns do not mix well. (Oh, I think I already covered that.)

* High School Social Outcasts who wear Black Trench Coats & Guns do not mix well.

* Folks adjudged Mentally Unstable, then turned loose without their meds & Guns do not mix well.

* The Democratic Party & Guns do not mix well.

Here are some cons for ya:

1) A lot of BATF and .gov would be out of a job
2) Taxes, licenses, permits cost money. .gov would lose that money
3) the amount of self defense cases would increase, causing a decrease in active criminals and an increase in DA cases

Personally, these are all PROs from my POV, but if written strategically (ie. these are cons to the economy\government), they could be used as cons....

question? are the cons to be actually problems with owning guns, or are the cons the argument you are trying to disprove. a debate style essay usually involves the writer disproving or arguing against something.

negative stigma.
dealing with ignorance.
bias (redneck, etc)

Accidental Deaths / Thefts - but provide accurate numbers. While it is true that ADs are very very low, they do exist.

1. Makes politicians/governments nervous. (read Madison's comments on the kingdoms of Europe in Federalist Papers #46)
2. Increases personal responsibility, which, again annoys socialist politicians.
