I'm a resident of New Hampshire, but I am at college in Vermont (University of). I'm planning on living here in Burlington next summer, and most likely for several years therafter.

As you probably guessed, I want to know how long I must wait before I can buy handguns in this state.
I assume that the school year doesn't really count, otherwise there would be a lot more in-state students. It's mainly irrelevant anyway, as I cannot keep guns in my dorm. I'll keep the purchasing for weekends and vacations back home.

Thanks,

Owen

Typically, residency can be established in 90 days.
If you are just in a dorm, however, that does not usually qualify.
Once you have a Driver's License in VT, you should be able to buy handguns there (provided you are 21).

(B13) May a person who resides in one state and owns property in another state purchase a handgun in either state?

If a person maintains a home in 2 states and resides in both states for certain periods of the year, he or she may, during the period of time the person actually resides in a particular state, purchase a handgun in that state. But simply owning property in another state does not qualify the person to purchase a handgun in that state.

ATF Frequently Asked Questions

The only stipulation is that you maintain a "home" in both states and actually reside in each state for part of the year. Ownership of the "home" is not required. The problem you will have is providing some type of proof to the FFL that you do "reside" in Vermont.

Are you allowed to have DLs from multiple states?

Often, proof of residency is as simple as a utility bill. If your college doesn't charge you for utilities (phone?) separately, maybe your dorm fee statement?

It is illegal to have more than one DL. But you could have an ID from one state and a DL from another. All you have to do is prove you were a resident at the time you applied for the card.

Carp Killer,
Can you get a state ID card while still holding a driver's license from any place? One state that I was looking at called their ID a 'Non-Drivers' ID, if I recall correctly.
And what if you want to work in a state? A poster at another website once implied that just an ID card wasn't enough for that; you had to get a DL. I suppose the state's main concern would be ensuring they get to collect their their state income tax.
Thanks.

I have researched this stuff and it depends on the state. States are mostly very concerned about who gets the income tax! They don't care about where you live. Nevada has an ID card, and from what I remember, you just show a utility bill. Or pay someone elses utility bill.;) As far as work is concerned, if you have to drive as part of your job, usually the state wants you licenced to drive in the job state. But, there are lots of exceptions, especially back east with all the small states. Most of the time, states just want the money, end of story. Federal law sez that only one DL per person. You can thank all the crooked truckers for that law.
