A few weeks ago, I sent this letter to Tom Cole (R-OK, 4th District), my Representative. Today, I got a reply from him:

<address elided>

Dear <Flyboy>

Thank you for contacting me regarding your support for H.R. 47, the Citizens' Self-Defense Act of 2005. I always appreciate hearing from fellow Oklahomans on important issues such as this.

As you may know, Representative Roscoe Bartlett introduced H.R. 47 on January 4, 2005, and it was immediately referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. This bill protects the right to obtain firearms for security, and to use them in defense of self, family, or home. As an NRA member, I am committed to protecting Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms. I also believe that law-abiding citizens have the right to protect themselves and their families from violent felons. I will vote for any legislation that provides individuals with the ability to provide for their own self-defense while also opposing any legislation that includes stringent gun control language for honest citizens. [emphasis mine]

Again, thank you for contacting me. It is through your insight that I am better able to represent the people of the Fourth District of Oklahoma. If I may ever be of any assistance to either you or your family, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Sincerely,
Tom Cole
Member of Congress

Other than the the fact that he only seems to oppose "stringent" gun control (whatever that means), I'm pretty happy with it. Now we just have to get it out of committee. Have you written yet?

I wrote a letter to my representative as well but I doubt I will get a good response back as he's a Democrat. But he's new to congress so there isn't any voting record to tell what his position on gun issues might be.

Way To Go Roscoe

Roscoe IS my representative, so I'll be writing to thank him for sponsoring this!

Sheesh. I live in California, and I'm here to tell you if you write such a letter to Dianne Feinstein, you will be very much less happy with the response. Thank your lucky stars.

Wow, that is impressive! I always get a letter back from Hutchison or Cornyn that says Thanks for contacting me, I will be sure to keep your views in mind when considering this legislation. Heaven forbid them tell me how they actually feel about the issue. :cuss:

response to my letter:

Dear <taliv>,

Thank you for letting me know of your
support for H.R. 47, the Citizens' Self-
Defense Act. It helps me better represent
Middle Tennessee when I hear from you.

H.R. 47 would reaffirm your right to
buy and own a weapon for self-defense. As a
strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I
support the right of law-abiding citizens,
sportsmen and hunters to own firearms, and
look forward to votes on H.R. 47 once the
House Judiciary Committee completes its
review of the bill. I have always believed
that we as a nation need to concentrate our
crime fighting efforts on the true problem -
- the criminals -- and not infringe on the
Constitutional right of all Americans to
protect themselves and their families.

If I may ever be of service to you or
your family, please do not hesitate to
contact me.

Stay in touch,
/s

no big surprises there, as Rep Gordon's reasonably squared away and typically very responsive. good to know, though.
