The Tiahrt Amendment limits the release of firearms related criminal investigation data to NON LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONS/GROUPS. Legitimate law enforcement (police) requests for relevant data are not blocked.

New York's Mayor Bloomberg and like minded others, The Brady Group included, are unhappy with Tiahrt, which would appear to be a good reason for retaining it.

Contact your senators and congressional representative now.

Are there any links where one could actually read the amendment? I'm not having any luck with my search!

Mayor Bloomberg has been tharted time and again in his efforts to get his hands on those lists of weapons used in criminal investagations. he wants to use them to bring lawsuits against gun shops that have sold (possibly more than their share of) these weapons. The Tiahrt Amendment stops or severly limits non-law enforcement groups from getting this info.
Bloomberg, not to be put off, sent buyers to other states to try and trick gunshop owners into making "straw sales" - sales to people other than who the gun is actually for. One person fills out the paper work and pays for it but wants the gun shop owner to hand it to a different person after the sale.
Evidentally, that's all it takes to be illegal in Bloomberg's eyes.

P.S. I already have contacted my senators and my rep.
