Here’s my review of the Desert Lake Classic, held at the Desert Lake Country Club near Las Vegas NV. Desert Lake C.C. is a private gun club owned by PMC Ammo Corporation and is in fact located directly behind their manufacturing facility in Henderson NV. Here’s a link to their web site: http://www.desertlakecc.com/

Please keep in mind that I didn’t attend the Shooters’ Cocktail Party at the Castaways Hotel and Casino; I didn’t shoot the prelim or the 5-stand; I also didn’t watch the Pro-Am or stick around for the awards / prizes.

I did however shoot the main event and that’s what I’ll be reviewing.

Aside from being located in the middle of nowhere, Desert Lake C.C. is a great facility. Each of the 20 stations has a nice wooden gazebo with overhead cover, benches and a gun rack. The entire course has a paved path, wide enough for golf carts. This made walking from station to station easy. They don’t yet have a pro shop / club house, but one is planned for the future.

Let me say right off the bat that this was the BEST run tournament I’ve ever shot in. It started right on time. Every machine at every station worked properly. There were competent pullers at every station. We never had to wait more than a minute at any station. And the stations were challenging but fun. They even had a 3 station warm-up field.

Saturday was a great day. I was shooting in the second rotation that started at 12:30. As I said before, we started right on time. The weather was about 70 with no wind. I met up with my squad mates, 2 of which I already knew. After some introductions we proceeded to shoot the course. I shot pretty well (for me). Event though it was a tough and challenging course, we all had a great time and finished in 3 hours. If you look at my pictures, you’ll see we’re all smiling at the end of the day.

Sunday was a little different. We started at 9:00am. The weather was a cool 50 with 45 to 50 mph wind gusts. Yes, you read that right. 45 to 50 mph wind gusts. Porta-potties were blowing over and sand and dust was getting everywhere. I mean everywhere. In general it was the worst day of shooting I’ve ever had. If you look at the scores, you’ll see virtually everybody shot better on Saturday than Sunday. People were getting crabby and nobody was having fun or shooting well. It just plain SUCKED. I left right after we finished, so I can’t tell you how the prizes were, but I will say they had the results posted on the Internet before I wrote this review.

Obviously they had no control over the weather, but the things they had control over turned out great. If they have this event again next year, DON’T MISS IT. I won’t.

Thanks for posting that. Not enough 870s on view, but that's only a minor quibble(G)...

Do you note any difference in how fast you pick up the target with that high desert background?

And which shooter are you?

Thanks again...

I found it easy to pickup the targets, especially against the blue sky. I'm shooter # 187. I only shoot in hunter class. I don't shoot NSCA because of too much sandbagging. In hunter class, if you beat me, you beat me. Look at the scores, A beat AA 168 to 167. C, D and E all beat B class. Can you say SANDBAGGERS ?

Here's a photo of us. From left to right it's Mark, Nancy, Joe, Mike and that's me on the left.

Yes, she seemed nice. But it was the damned thing I ever saw. Every time I turned around, somebody else was stopping by to "chat her up". I guess life's not that tough when you're a good looking skirt.

Pick the true statement from below.

A.Being the gentlemen we are, we let her shoot the squad "high score" on the first day.

or

B.She’s one hell of an A class shooter and just beat us fair and square.
