So I bought an ishapore enfield 2A1 from a THR member. Took it out to the range today, I'm liking the gun so far. The trigger is light but creepy. After lubing the bolt, the cycling was fast and the ejection was positive. The big downside include the sights and the accuracy (connected I know).

The iron's stink. I'm used to good irons, dawson precisions on my XD, aperature sights on my match rifle, even the peep on my FAL are better than the enfield sights. Worse than irons were the fact that even at the lowest elevation setting the shots were about 12" high at 100 yards. That's unacceptable. Any suggestions?

Also, I don't know if it was the sights, the rest, or the ammo but the gun was minute of pie plate at 100 yards, that's good enough for my intended purposes, but I'd really like it to shoot at least 3-4 MOA with portugeuse milsurp 7.62 NATO.

all and all, I like the gun, it's just not perfect.

It was designed to be "minute of man", and the sights were not well adapted from the .303 to the 7.62x51. Of course, the whole Enfiled platform was originally designed to support volley fire at long ranges, not bench rest accuracy. They are what they are.

The one I've got I originally shot with some of the Indian .308, and the results sucked. Switched to some of the South African, MUCH better. In this case the ammo was lousy, it shoots well with all the others I've tried.

Only way I know to lower the POI would be to put on a higher front sight blade. It's a standard problem with lots of military surplus rifles.

Put together right, bore and crown not damaged, the design is capable of fine accuracy, but individual rifles do vary.

Awesome, Mojo sights has just started making a microclick elevation adjustable ghost ring sight for the SMLE...

that'll help the rifle a lot.

The SMLE was set up for a battle zero of 300 yards (or thereabouts) in .303 Brit. If you're shooting even higher with .308, that's expected with original sights.
