The SP101 is a fantastic gun but not as "elegant" as a Smith and Wesson. You should be able to find a little used Smith for $500. I bought an outstanding used 686 357 in all stainless for $400 at Gander Mountain. The trigger is buttery smooth and all of the tolerances were perfect.

Smith model 13 can be had for around that. Maybe a 686 here or there.

You might find a S&W model 66 2.5" for that, or a model 65 3" , K frame guns, and considered among the best of the Smith line, ( at least by me)

S&W are really nice, if you have more money than what you could afford for a Ruger, however if you have less than what a Ruger would cost you go with a Taurus.

In that price range I would suggest a 3" Ruger GP-100. They are good guns and will serve you will. If you are willing to look around you can find a really nice used Ruger Six-Series revolver or a S&W K frame for well under $500.

The last Security Six I got was a 2 3/4 inch model for 340 from another member here. It was a 150 series though which can be undesireable because the grip is different thatn all the rest of the Sec Sixes. I just use the standard grip though.

If you want a carry gun go with the SP 101. If just a shooter I like the model 66 smith and wesson or the ruger gp 100.

Don't go by the MSRP you see on the company sites for new guns. The real world price is usually considerably less. A handgun that has a list price of $500 can usually be found for well under $400. I bought a KelTec P-32 that had a list price of $330 for $219. That SP-101 that lists for $589 can be found online for exactly $437 from Buds Gun Shop. The 3" GP100 is only $485 even though it lists for $659. (although the GP100 isn't in stock but the SP101 is)

I agree that's why I suggested the 3" GP100. If you are going to carry a fairly heavy gun you might as well get 6 rounds for the extra weight.
