This is probably a dumb question, but I searched and didn't find anything about this.

I just got my first 1911, a RIA Tactical. The mag that came with it has a "stepped" follower. I tried a mag from my brother-in-laws Kimber with a "standard" follower and the slide wouldn't lock back on the empty mag. I want to buy a couple of Chip McCormick mags, but was wondering if I could buy the "stepped" follower and put in them.

Is this a good idea or not? Thanks for your help.

I had some issues with many of my other 1911 mags not locking back in my first RIA. I contacted them and they sent me a new slide lock lever that cured the problems. Tolerence stack up I guess.

I too use a lot of the CMC "shooting star" (Tactical) mags along with a motly assortment of 7-round msgs in my RIA guns without issues.

The mag that came w/my Tactical (I think its a MecGar) works great. The Chip McCormick Shooting Stars I bought work great. Now, the Colts I cought with the "rounded" followrs, well those are total crap. Not only do they not lock the slide back, they actually go past the slide stop and make it impossible to remove the mag without pulling the slide stop out a little. This is not an issue with the gun, but an issue with extremely poorly designed mag followers.
