I'm confused about rifle bullet seating. I'm loading for a .270 winchester. The bullet is a 160 Nosler Partition and the powder is 49 grains of h4350, a middle power load. I'm finding different information and am not sure which is correct and safe. Here goes:
Nosler Manual says the SAAMI maximum OAL is 3.340
Hodgdon Annual Manual says 3.340.
When reading the nosler manual about bullet seating, it says to chamber a dummy round with a blackened bullet and the measure it. I followed the instructions to a "T" and did it several times to get the average and I came up with a range from 3.410 to 3.425 after adjusting the depth per the instructions -.015 to -.03.
So,
1. Which is correct?
2. Which is safe?
3. Does the seating depth depend on the rifle and what works best for MY gun?
4. Can the Nosler method be used if it exceeds the SAAMI maximum?
thanks, Jeff

For the umpteenth time, "there is no SAAMI maximum cartridge OAL". The OAL specified in reloading manuals is simply the length they used for the load listed.

1; All are correct

2; All are safe if the loads are loaded up properly

3; Yes

4; Yes, although the cartridge may not fit the magazine of your rifle.

It really doesn't matter - I'd use the published length to start so your following the data right on. Once comfortable adjust the length a bit like how Nosler says to do it - also make sure they fit in your magazine if your using one.
