Hey all, just wanted to share my "EMERGENCY SHORT TERM INSURANCE BAG" with you. it started as a springfeild M6 survival rifle/shotgun (.22/.410) that i put some additions on.

I added a sling and swivel studs, two nylon knife pouches. in one pouch i have a Calmus army folding knife and a small mini-maglite, in the other i have a silvia match case /compass. i added a hammer extender and took off the stupid trigger guard. I also took a dremel to the front sight and undercut it to improve its visibility through the peephole site. i painted the rear site black.

I then bought the soft, nylon case to carry it broke down that Springfeild sells.

Inside i store the rifle broke down in two peices, a CRKT M16 folding Tanto blade, an old Aitor Jr Jungle skinner, and a 50 round box of .22 LR.

In the pocket on the outside i carry: 2 automatic fishing reels that you tie to a tree and wait till a fish bite; bag with hooks, weights, line and 2 bobbers; also carry 4 Thompsons survival snares (2 small, 2 larger), a Gerber Multi-pliers, 25 ft paracord, 30 ft nylon braided decoy cord and a wire saw.

On the web strapping along the other side of the case i have 2 folding rifle shell wallets that strap on to the webbing strap. in one wallet i have seven .410 shot shells and seven winchester 000 buck shot in .410. in the other wallet i have 6 rounds of shot shells and two film cannisters of ,22 LR shells. Also on the outside is a GI canteen & canteen cover with a GI type metal cup that the canteen fits into.

When ever i leave for a long day in the mountains or a long trip, i just grab the rifle case/ " SHORT TERM EMERGENCY INSURANCE COMFORT BAG" and my ruger P4 22/45:

with some extra rounds and mags. It feels great to have "insurance" :)
My thanks to all of you on the website for your great ideas! -Eric

My appologies, i guess i shouldnt have said Bug out Bag, it is missing alot. i have since edited the post to reflect the use this bag was actually intended for. thank you

Aside from being one of the most underpowered BOBs I have seen someone put together, you seem to be lacking food, water, clothing, tools, medication, and medical supplies.

From what you have described, you appear to have your basic hunting fishing procurement stuff for a weekend of hiking, all of your other gear going into your vehicle, pack, or whatever.

You have some neat stuff, but not what would be all that beneficial for a SHTF BOB. You will need additional BOBs.

M6 Rifle Bag as BOB

Nice set up indeed. Looks a lot like my M6 set-up. I've got a small fishing kit, lots of matches and strikers, a .41 mag slide glued to the stock that fits 2 3/4" and 3" .410s just dandy. I also have a mini first aid kit in there somewhere.

What do you think of the M6 (.22LR over .410) as an emergency self-defense gun ?

I like the 3", 1/4 oz. (110 grain) slugs at 1800 fps. A far cry from 12 gauge, I know, but many a deer have been taken by such slugs. I also like the 000 buck loads - they compliment the faster Aquila 22LR loads quite well, I feel.

Comments ??

How did you tie off the ends of the paracord on your M6's barrel ? I used some Loc-tite. Kinda ugly, but workable.

I don't really understand the point of the 22/45 in the bag. You've already got the M6 for hunting. It seems to me that just because the pistol is the same caliber doesn't mean it's worth much. Defensively, there are obviously better things. How about sticking a solid .357 in the bag instead? It could take larger game in a pinch, and is a good defensive arm. You'd have more bases covered that way. The .22 autoloader is just dead weight. It won't hunt as well as the rifle, and if you're going to carry the weight anyway, it doesn't make sense to bring instead of a full-caliber pistol.

hello again:

Hey Rory,

As for the forearm wrap, i have since taken it off, as i was worried that i may have wrapped it too tight and warped the barrels. i now carry the paracord separately in the carry case.

At this time i should give credit where credit is due, i got some info on how to trick out an M6 in an article done by a guy named V Shrake, you can find his article here: http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/v-shrake/m6.html . my only warning is to avoid drilling the rear peephole sight larger, i didnt do it, but others have and didnt like it.

The M6 as a defensive weapon. I find it would be better than a rock or a knife, but i think its marginal. I have never used slugs in it since the M6 i have has full choke, not sure how that would work. but i would use the 000 Buck shot from winchester and wait till the attacker was within 25-35 FT. i'll be willing to bet that 3, .30 caliber balls going into someone/thing would make it stop and think. if i had to use the bird/small game shot, i would try to hit in the face to take out the eyes or cause alot of bleeding that would run into the eyes to cloud vision. My strategy may be different from most people's as i am not going to get into a prolonged gun battle. i just want something to reach out and touch the attacker to discourage them from following. regarding the .22 LR for defensive action. well, it will work in a pinch, but it would work best if i can hide and wait for the attacker to get close and try for a head shot. probably wont kill them, but i'll be willing to bet that a 22 bullet in the noggin would discourage all but the most determined assailant. i think it would make a hell of a club if need be. The other reason i like the M6 is because it is built like a tank and is of very simple design and would work after being neglected for a while, especailly in stainless steel.

As for the Ruger 22/45 in .22 LR, i carry it to have one semi-auto firearm to provide multiple cover shots to enable me to get out of the area or to have multiple shots to rapidly put into an attacker. I cannot afford a center fire weapon, nor could i afford to feed one, so i have my .22's, which is better than nothing or a sharp stick. Also, i shoot alot with the .22's so i know it well, there isnt much muzzle rise so i can place multiple shots into a small area. and last, i can carry like 400-500 rounds of ammo without breaking my already messed up back.

My approach to surviving in an emergency is to avoid contact, move slowly, and scavange for survival goods on the way to a safe area. i would NEVER EVER harm anyone in order to get survival goods, but im not above scavanging . now, i do have an actual Bug Out Bag with basic supplies, but my back problems prevent me from carrying an awful lot. and im not into making cashes up in the hills, it would be really hard to find them in the winter, or to keep them hidden.

Basically, i carry this kit, the M6, and the 22/45 cause i cant afford an AR .223, & all the ammo, a .45 auto and ammo, nor could i carry as much as i think i would need in a real SHTF situation. if you cant have the best, at least have something.

If it does look like a really long term thing, then i have my bike and two big GI dufflebags that i would fill with food and gear for me and the family, sling them over the center bar of the bike and walk it up into the mountains via the rail road tracks near my house.

Thanks -Eric

My advice that you didn't ask for :)o forgive me) is to sell off the 22/45 for a used .357 or .38 revolver. .38 Special ammo is really quite cheap and at least an adequate defensive round. Still something you can 'shoot at them with and hope they'll duck for a while' if you so choose, but that will also be adequate should you be backed into a corner.

Just something to roll around for a bit. :)

Amen!

I think I'll start quoting this in all the SHTF threads. And maybe I'll add, a lot of this "wheel" has been invented in the Boy Scouts of America, and at REI. If you really want to practice your SHTF skills, get involved in Hoy Scouts, and/or go backpacking.
