I have a recent thread regarding caliber choice for my BIL's 50th birthday. I now understand, funny enough, he would love a 270.

Suggestions of Weatherby Sporter S2 vs Savage 10/110 Trophy Hunter XP?
Others, wood stock preferred, same price range.

Either should be plenty accurate. The Weatherby will have better wood, and be a better looking rifle IMO. I'd personally go for the Vanguard Deluxe. If you prefer something with more classic lines, a new M70 featherlight or Ruger M77 Hawkeye.

I have owned plenty of rifles, my Winchester 70 Featherweight has the best feel of any, but my Tikka T3 Stainless is the most accurate with factory ammo and handloads. I have owned six Savages all of them shot well, but none of them looked for felt especially good, still great for a cheap gun though.
Nothing wrong with a 270 it is one of my favorites.

I would look seriously to the M70 Featherweight or the M70 Sporter. My .270 Win is a M70 Super Grade, and is a seriously wonderful rifle. The Featherweights and Sporter models in my area go for about $650 to $700. The Super Grades go for about $900.

I'd look at a M70 in .270. IMO the new M70s are the nicest production rifles under $1000 made currently. I have an Extreme Weather in 30-06 and a Featherweight in .243.

I would agree with that. I have a pair of M70 EW SS rifles in .308 Win and .300 Win Mag.

To be sure no-one ever said "ooo, my BIL bought me a Savage for my 50th birthday!".

If it's about the same price go Weatherby -- you'll never have another chance to get this right for a few bucks more.

I think everyone agrees the Winchester 70 is a very hard to beat rifle, I would really have to get nit picky to find anything bad to say about mine.

I bought my son a Weatherby Vanguard Sub MOA for his last birthday. I gave him some choices to get him started...the Winchester Model 70 was among them.

Ultimately the Sub minute of angle guaranty was the deciding factor. While it's guaranteed to shoot that well with premium ammo or Weatherby factory ammo...I used the cheapest Remington .30-06 shells they had in stock and it still shot well under an inch. I was blown away.

An additional bonus was that the Sub MOA was a few hundred cheaper than some of the other guns we looked at.

To keep the world spinning properly and not upset the forces of the universe, also the theory of parallellitivity, the proper rifle choice for the .270 Winchester is the Winchester Model 70.

If you want wood, Winchester Featherweight. If you want to save $100 get the Hawkeye. The Winchester is well worth the price difference to me.

I don't think you'll get any walnut stocked rifle within $200 of the price of the guns you are looking at. In that price range with a quality synthetic stock I'd buy Tikka.
