Hi guys,
Does anyone use a Filler.in a smokeless rifle cartridge? If so what do you use?

Thanks

I shoot a lead bullet load in my 375 H&H for a practice and plinking load for use off a bench. I use a pinch of my wife's pillow stuffing which just happens to be Dacron. I use just enough to hold the Dacron against the powder and insert with a wooden pencil, eraser first. This filler is completely burned upon firing and leaves no mess in the chamber or barrel.

I have never liked the use of fillers, as they can be abbrasive and/or foul the bore. With loads that fill the case minimally, I prefer to raise the barrel straight up and lower it slowly to the target. The way the powder lays is generally consistent and the accuracy is very good.

Dacron pillow stuffing, or Pufflon is the prefered filler if you just gotta do it.
It totally burns and leaves no residue or chance of a bore obstruction.

Cotton balls may or may not burn completely fast enough to get out of the way!

The only time filler would or should be used is with reduced loads of fast pistol powder or black powder.

Never ever used with full power rifle loads.

I've tried just about every know type of filler and nothing works better or is more convenient to use than Dacron. No mess, no fouling and no residue. It is sold under different names a pillow stuffing but I think it's all the same. I learned about Dacron in an article by Jim Carmichael in Handloader magazine over thirty years ago and used it ever since. Carmichael's articles on cast bullets were the best and I wish he was still around to write more.
