Hello all. My wife has shown an interest in hunting with me next year. She could use her grandfathers .35 lever gun but this would be a good excuse to buy another bolt gun. I was thinking about the T/C Venture in .243. In the off season I could also use a .243 for coyote instead of my .308. Suggestions?

She could use her grandfathers .35 lever gun

A Marlin 336 in 35 Remington is a perfect deer rifle. Spend that money on a nice smallish scope for her 35, like a Leupold-made Redfield 2-7x32mm.

Well, to go along with you original post - I think .243 is a good choice. Could save a few $$ by going to Marlin XS7 :) That would leave a bit more for scope so that you could see further in the "off season" :)

Chains 1240 - I would go with her original suggestion and just use the rifle that she already has available.

There is a lot of time between then and now and she might have arterial motives - why she wants to go hunting with you.

Maybe it has something to do with trust, or maybe it has something to do with the fact that maybe she thinks that you are going out and having fun without her.

There is nothing that will ruin a deer camp quicker then a woman.

Just to play it safe, it would not use it as an excuse to buy yourself a new rifle.
Save the money and wait until you see if you want to take her with you or not - because being a woman by next year - she might change her mind and you might end up selling that rifle to buy her a new car or couch or something.

If it is going to be her gun, let her pick it out.

I bet between you and your acquaintances, there is a variety of makes, calibers, types. Find out what she likes, what she is comfortable shooting, what she can shoot accurately. And don't be upset if she wants to get something else in a year or two...I bet you own more than one rifle, right?

You are a lucky man, having a wife that supports hunting and wants to be out there with you. Encourage her.

Thanks for the advice everyone. The Marlin XS7 is actually on the top of my list now. With a Redfield scope I would be looking at about $500. First I will see how well she likes her grandfathers .35 lever action. Is is light and quick handling. Heck, if she enjoys hunting maybe her grandfather will give it to me, erhmm ermmm I mean her. :D

Yup, for wives - sentimentality has a place in the equation. I'd go slow and let her develop her sense of what works best. Along the way, you can have fun conversations and she can shoot your stuff to see how it works for her. She may have neighbor friends of other women friends who have husbands with stuff that she can discuss with them? Very unpredictable about which way this will go? The up-side is that once she makes up her mind, a nice "gift" from hubby will go a long ways :)

Some model of .243 or even .22-250 maybe but it has to be her choice.

Women need to choose their own guns and their own vehicles, otherwise your decision (informed by years of experience, natch!) comes back to bite you in the behind. :)
