My trap gun has a 15.5" LOP, my Sako 75 has a 14" LOP. While I've not read much about rifle LOP, I'm 6'3" with a 37" sleeve length. Do any of you adjust your rifle LOP? Any benefits? My long neck feels skrunched (official term) when getting down on the stocks of regular long guns. I'm thinking of having the gunsmith lengthen it.

Hold the rifle with the butt in your elbow and grasp the grip. If there's any 'discomfort', it's too short. "neck feels skrunched". That says there is 'discomfort'. Put on a longer recoil pad or spacers to add length until you can easily grasp the rifle and reach the trigger with no stress on your arm or wrist. No smithy required.

Put a medium size slip-on Limbsaver pad on it and see how it feels. That will increase the LOP 1". Put shims under the pad if you want to increase it more. Once you figure your what length you like, then you can take it to a gunsmith if you like so he can shim it and put a fitted pad on it so it will look nice.

Just remember that adding length to the stock is also going to affect balance and handing. More of an issue with shotguns than rifles, but something to keep in mind.

I’m 6’-2” +/- with a 35” sleeve and a long neck (I’ve heard all the pencil jokes already thank you.) The standard Remington 870 stock fits me perfectly as far a cheek weld and length of pull. The problem was only the very bottom part of the stock butt was in my shoulder groove when mounting the gun naturally. This is the sort of thing you don’t notice when dry mounting the gun, but you really notice it when you fire (surprise.) To get the stock correctly in the shoulder groove I had to scrunch my neck down and forward, throwing off the previously perfect cheek weld and everything else. Someone here on THR (Dave McC?) recommended these:

I got one installed by a gunsmith, and haven’t looked back since. It lowers the butt plate so it falls naturally in the shoulder groove when I naturally mount the gun, while standing up straight with my head held up. There is a little bit more muzzle rise, due to the increase distance the barrel is above the shoulder mount, but I’m able to compensate for it.

I have the adjustable cant/drop butt plate on my shotguns because it helps it helps keep my head upright. I'll play with the rifle and see what I come up with.

JohnRov-

I was going to mention that.

If your neck is scrunched up, consider the drop and the comb shape/height.

The Sako stock has a nice Monte Carlo comb, not the skinny straight thing common on too many rifles. But your dimensions are far from the average that most stock guns are designed for.

Good luck!

LOP for shotgun and rifle are different

It is longer for shotgun. There is nothing wrong with too short for rifle however. It does sound like your problem though is with comb height.
