The length of pull for the FAL rifle is about 14.25". This, as I understand it, is actually pretty long, longer than the M16A2 and MUCH longer than the AK-47 with the Warsaw-Pact length buttstock. (Though I believe the M4 stock, all the way out, is this length.)

I'm a tall dude, so I don't notice it (though oddly, other guns with that LOP feel too long). I asked around at the FAL Files if anyone thought the LOP felt too long. They're FAL guys, so no, they thought it was fine. Some said it was too short (!!).

How about you guys? I've read plenty of reviews of FAL rifles in the magazines, and none mentioned the long LOP. There isn't much that can be done in any case; in the fixed stock FAL, the buffer tube goes almost all the way to the buttplate. Shortening the stock significantly would mean a redesigned lower with a shorter tube and a different return spring (though this would make an interesting project).

Of course, a para stock could be made shorter, but no one seems to be clamoring for this.

What say you, THR FAL shooters. Anybody wishing for a shorter FAL stock? Anybody try firing it with heavy clothing or body armor?

Yes, the FAL LOP is too long for me(5'6").

My solution was to ditch the Penguin stock with rubber buttpad and go with an Israily LB butt with a steel buttplate. I don't have the measurements handy, but it is at least 1/2 to 3/4 inch shorter.

Still not ideal for me, but much better.

Hmm, interesting topic. I just checked my two FALs along with my AR (with an A1 length stock). The FAL with the European length stock(US made Penguin furniture) has a much longer LOP, the other FAL with a DSA X-stock is shorter (probably around the length of an AR A2 stock), and the AR15 is very short. Shouldering them, I felt them all comfortable. I'm 6'2".

However, I do shoot them differently. I prefer a shorter stock on the AR because I shoot with my nose to the charging handle and my eye right up against the arperture. If I did that with my FAL I'm have a bruised nose and black eye! :uhoh: The other FAL with the shorter stock has a scope and I noticed that I have it mounted well forward due to the shorter stock. I'd probably prefer it's stock a little longer.

My AK's stock is just way too short. I'd lengthen it, but it's a side folder.

The stocks came in different lengths to adjust lop for the shooter.

I have the penguin buttstock, and I wish the lop was a little over an inch longer. Then again, I am 6'5".....

I’ve got a DSA SA-58 (STG Pattern), and the LOP seems a little short for me (6’). I guess I spent way too much time with M16s cause I’m constantly creeping up on the FAL.

Two new shooting glasses lenses later, a switch to a Para rear sight, and I’m learning though.
