I am going to purchase a boyds stock here soon for my savage axis and have some LOP questions. I shoot the savage very well now with its current stock but I'm not sure what the LOP is on it. Also its mainly a target rifle and varmint rifle so would a shorter or longer LOP help? I have a tall body if that matters at 6ft6.

Also, say I went with a thumbhole or the boys pro varmint stock would LOP need changed from current LOP?

If you want to check the current length of pull measure from the center of the trigger to the center of the pad.

I did some quick googling, and it looks like the older axis had a 14" lop, and the newer 13.5.
Personally 14" is about perfect for me, at 6'2 and average build.

Ive found that with stocks that have a vertical grip, my personal preference is to run a slightly shorter length of pull than it is with a open gripped stock. This is just my personal preference.

Since you dont know what your preferred lop is, and i assume your not having them fit a recoil pad, id suggest going with the stock lop to start with. If that feels too short id just buy a cheap 1" or so pad from ebay and fit that. If you go with the ProV there isnt any taper at the heal or toe so you can fit a pad to it easily with pretty much any bench mounted sander.

The flip side is you could order long (@ 6'6, qnd if your arms are long you may prefer a 14.25-14.5" lop) and cut it down till it fits just the way you want. I dislike cutting stock, and know where i like my lops, so i usually go the other way.

Measure from center of trigger to the buttstock to get the LOP for your existing rifle. A "ballpark trick" can tell you your personal LOP - hold your finger in a "trigger position," bend your arm 90 degrees, and measure from the crease of your elbow to the pad of your finger. Gets close enough to work as a starting point - if you want to do custom fitting, then adding shims to a shorter-than-needed fitting stock will give you the exact measurement.

Around 13.5" fits me and is about average among most manufacturers, but everyone is built different. I'm 5'10" with average arms and build. I'd tend to prefer the LOP to be shorter rather than longer. When shooting in heavy winter clothes a LOP that is about right in a T-shirt can be too long. I can make one work that is a bit too short easier than one that is a bit too long.

I'm only about 5'7" and most of my rifles are pistol grip, a 12" to 13" LOP is just right for me ... But the important part I wanted to add is that it depends on what I'm wearing and the scope I'm using, some have more generous eye relief than others ... that's what makes adjustable stocks so desirable.

The weird thing about thumbhole stocks, or rifles with AR type pistol grips, is that with an equivalent LOP to a traditional rifle stock, the thumbhole stock feels shorter to me. Probably because my arm angle changes with a thumbhole or pistol grip stock compared to a traditional stock.
