Hunter loses gun on opening day

Michigan State Police Troopers at the Gladwin Post received a report of a lost firearm on opening morning of deer season.

A Beaverton man told Troopers that he drove from his resident on Oak Ridge Drive to Beaverton Road via Hunter Road, M-18 and Dale Road, and upon arriving at his hunting area, realized his gun had fallen from the back of his truck.

The man told Troopers that the gun was a Remington 30-30 bolt action and was stored in a green plastic gun case. The serial number of the firearm has been entered into a national database pending its recovery.

Anyone with information on the lost gun is encouraged to contact the MSP–Gladwin Post at 426-4811.

I don't believe I have ever seen a Remington bolt rifle chambered for the 30-30 round, or any other bolt rifle for that matter. As I am not a big 30-30 fan, did Remington make one? I have seen them in single shots and lever rifles and pumps if I remember right but no bolt guns.

Even scarier. Last hunting season, we were using our pop-up as deer camp at a state park in mid-Michigan. The 2nd day of the season, the guy from a couple sites over came by and asked if we'd found his pistol. Seems he dropped some sort of stainless 44 out of his pack getting in or out of the truck and had no idea where it was.

Matter of fact, the Winchester Model 54 bolt action was also available in .30-30 Winchester. Nice gun, if you can find one. Same goes for the Remington 788, if you can find one in .30-30. And I lost a wonderful Savage 340 in .30-30 to my ex-wife as part of the divorce settlement.

I saw this story in the local paper about a month ago. It's about 10 miles from where I live.

We do have our share of bumpy roads. And uhmmmmm, what's a tail gate? You mean those metal parachutes everybody uses as a ramp?

Such a gun isn't worth a lot of money but probably had sentimental value. The odds of it being discovered through use in a crime is zero in that neck of the woods. It's some other stump jumper's family heirloom now.

Many moons ago..

in South Bend a guy was taking the cash from their store to the bank for deposit. Had about $7,200 in the bag IIRC. Laid it on top of the car to get his keys and open the door.

Got to the bank and remembered where he left the bag.

Local news said there was a substantial reward for it's recovery. Funny...it was never found.

Why not keep your rifle in the cab of the truck? Even if you've got three guys inside, you could put it behind the seat. Actually, I'd rather put my rifle in the cab and let my buddies ride in the bed. If they fall out at least they can find their own way home. And nobody's gonna steal them.
