As others have said, the .243 will be just fine for deer and hogs. Using the Barnes TSX I wouldn't hesitate to use it up to elk size critters. I also hunt with 7x57, .308 and 30-06 quite a bit and I feel that the .243 is excellent for someone just getting in to big game hunting.

With the extremely light recoil you can concentrate on shooting well without worrying about your shoulder. The recoil is light enough you can sit at a bench all day without a problem.
 
To me the .243 is just a touch on the light side,an excellent cartridge in the hands of a very good rifleman.
You might do well to look at the 25-06 which is a bit more powerful and a bit more versatile.
