Ok, first, I'll apologize if any of you find this annoying.................................So I've got my favorite handgun(s).....and a good shotgun......Now I'm interested in picking up a rifle. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about them, aside from my .22 Marlin .........I'm looking for something larger than .22 for fun/plinking, but that could also be used for hunting if need be.........I like how the mini-14 shoots, but I think it is a little expensive. Are there any alternatives in the semi auto platform, or do I need to look at lever actions?

Well, if you think the mini-14 is expensive, go with an AK variant, if its cheap semi-auto plinking your after a WASR-10 is hard to beat for cheap fun

You know, if you want a really cheap rifle with cheap ammo, it's hard to look past bolt-action milsurps. They're a ton of fun to shoot, surplus ammo is cheap, and many have a decent aftermarket in terms of stocks and such. For example, a 91/30 can be had, shipped to an FFL, for less than $100. And for less than $100, you can get 400+ rounds of military surplus ammo. I'd just noticed you mentioned semi-auto and lever action, and not bolt action - something I certainly wouldn't just rule out.

As for the semi-auto route, the WASR's are dropping in price from the level they were earlier in the gun-buying frenzy. As it's starting to wear off and everyone and their mom now has an "assault rifle", they're coming down in price.
