I own a 10/22 and a .22 bolt gun. I have never had, or had the desire to install, optics on these rifles. I am getting my first centerfire gun (a Saiga in 7.62x39) tomorrow. I am not the most knowledgable person with firearms (thats what THR is for :) ) and as you can tell my collection is just getting going.

I am thinking that, once I get down the iron sights on my new Saiga at the 25 and 100 yard range, I might want to get a semi-cheap red dot sight for this gun. Since I have little or no knowledge on this, help me out. I assume not just any sight will mount on this gun. Of the sights that do, which ones have people had good luck with? Under $100, preferable under $50.

Thanks in advance.

My take?

Don't go cheap on sights dude. You might look into a www.ultimak.com rail, with a cheap low power pistol scope. (I know one of their models fit the Saiga series, check www.saiga-12.com, in their forum for further details)

That would get you a decent scope out to 200 yards, for less than $200 if you shop it carefullly. You can always upgrade the scope later as you see fit.

(I know, I know, you only spent $200-$300 on the gun).

you can mount just about any kind of sight on the saiga, as long as you have the right mount... you'll soon enough see the mounting rail on the left side of the receiver, there is a special clamp on mount to fit this rail..

the mount comes in 2 different forms, either rings, or a weaver rail... i would get the rail mount, most red dot scopes utilze this rail mounting system, which means no extra rings to buy... if you find that you want a traditional scope then it's just a matter of buying rings to mount on the weaver rail...

i don't use optics on my 762 saiga, cause it's more of a point and pull the trigger, fun gun than anything...
