I'm seeking to buy a .270 and have narrowed my choice to either a Remington 700 CDL or a Winchester Model 70 Sporter. I have two Remington 700s in other models and calibers, but have never owned a Winchester rifle. I've handled both rifles and love the features, balance, feel, and appearance of both. The Winchester is a bit cheaper, but the price is not enough different to affect my decision. I would like to hear from you out there especially if you have had experience with both rifles. Private messages are welcome. Thanks for your help.

I like the older Remington 700 BDL and ADL guns. Given a choice today I would likely take the Winchester over the Remington. Since you mention only Winchester and Remington I won't get into other manufacturers. Additionally, I have no up close first hand experience with the Remington CDL guns.

With all the bad things I've been hearing about Remingtons Quality Control and their Customer Service. I'd be spending my money on Winchester.

I have a 700 from 1993 that is a superb rifle. But new Remingtons aren't what they used to be. The choice today would be the Model 70, without a doubt.

Model. 70 - easy choice. Only thing I dislike about M70s are the raised cheek piece on the stock... Others will disagree.

I would only have an older remington at this point, but with the winchester I am not fond of the control feed system... go SAVAGE!

Winchester by a long shot, but in that caliber I'd buy the Featherweight. Don't let the name fool you. The Featherweight is about the same weight a sporter made by anyone else.

I think you have it backwards. The 70 sporter has very mild cheek piece, but it is not raised. It was the older 700 BDL with the raised cheekpiece. Both the CDL and 70 sporter have very classic stock designs with no raised cheekpiece.

The Winchester has a 3 position safety that locks the firing pin instead of the trigger. In the center position the rifle is on safe and the bolt can be cycled. In the rear position it locks the bolt closed which keeps the bolt closed when carrying the rifle. For those reasons only I would buy the Winchester. The Winchester also has a flat bottom receiver that fits snugly into the stock. Like jmr40 says, buy the featherweight.

Winchester for sure. I have a Model 54 and it is really swell. Another option, outside those you suggested, is the CZ550. I would still prefer the Winchester, due to the safety, but the CZ is a close second.

Maybe raised is a misuse of terms? In any case the big bump of wood on the left side of the stock drives me crazy when slung up in the prone position as it makes the rifle want to cant counterclockwise. I used mine for 1 match season. I won most of the matches due in large part to the great trigger, great accuracy, and especially the gun's ability to hold POI with a hot barrel. But I never could get comfortable with the stock. I greatly prefer the stock on the Ruger Hawkeyes... Not that I particularly care for Ruger Hawkeyes.

I have had 2 Remington 700s and one Winchester model 70. I greatly prefer the Winchester. Far better trigger.

Ever since Freedom Group bought out Remington, they've gone to crap, as has Bushmaster. Bean counters in suits building rifles, lol.

Winchester model 70 all the way.

Thank you all for your input. Winchester gets the nod. After searching through GunBroker and finding wildly variable quality and price, I'll be buying new. So, it will be a Winchester Model 70 Sporter .270. Now I have to decide if I want the Super Grade model or the standard Sporter. Ahh, decisions, decisions. Thanks to everyone.

Get the Winchester Model 70 Super Grade. Unless you're old and
feeble, as I am. You will be able to carry it. In the long run the
Super Grade is not only nicer it will be worth more money if
you decide to sell it. The .270 is a good choice and will work
just fine on most stuff here in North or South America.

As much as I love the 700's, it's been one bad experience after another with the one's they've been sending out the door the last few years. To add to that, CS is terrible.

Given the choice, I think I would probably go for the M70. I've had a couple over the years, they were accurate. And Winchester quality and workmanship seems to be a lit better than Rem. these days.
