You are correct .338 is overkill many times over. For deer and elk I use my A-bolt 270WSM 160gr. works great. Out here in northwern colorado where I have room to shoot I wanted a Sako .338 Lapua but decided that the gun and ammo was going to be to expensive even on reloads. I now have a .308 Savage 10 BAS/T and can't wait to take it out. I think a good overall round would be 30-06 or 300 win mag but... Part of me still says go for it! I would love to have a .338!
