You are correct .338 is overkill many times over. For deer and elk I use my A-bolt 270WSM 160gr. works great. Out here in northwern colorado where I have room to shoot I wanted a Sako .338 Lapua but decided that the gun and ammo was going to be to expensive even on reloads. I now have a .308 Savage 10 BAS/T and can't wait to take it out. I think a good overall round would be 30-06 or 300 win mag but... Part of me still says go for it! I would love to have a .338!

It never ceases to amaze me how everyone knows what's best for somebody else. I have enough trouble trying to figure out what's best for me. While I agree that a .338 isn't really needed for deer and that it isn't a good starter rifle, if the man is set in his ways, being determined to change his mind is just going to piss him off and make him go with the .338 for sure. Voice your opinion and then let him get what he wants. It's his wallet, and his shoulder. As for the Mossburg part of it, I've heard really good things about the 4x4. I'm wanting a 7mm Rem mag myself and the price of the 4x4 is making me consider it. Just my 0.02

Mossberg makes a .243 that's plenty of caliber for deer and just enough kick to where he knows he's shooting something other than a .22.

I may have not explained myself very well, he is actually asking me about the calibers and which to get. I was telling yall about the .338 to give you an idea of how much he knew about guns.

.308

As inherently accurate as anything out there in a hunting rifle. It will do anything he needs it to do in North America. It can be bought 99% of places that sell ammo. It is a handloaders dream as far as components. Its recoil is not too much for most folks. It has a nice boom instead of a crack. Etc, etc. :D

I did misunderstand what you were talking about Arkel23. If he's asking your opinion, I would try and persuade him towards a .270, .30-06, or .308 if all he's going to be hunting is game the size of whitetail. Mossberg has him covered on those too, in the ATR or the 4x4.

This is not the kind of thing you rationally discuss with your cousin. His minds made up. You tell him its expensive to shoot, lots of recoil, then offer to drive him down to the store to buy something!!! You might try to appeal to his Navy side an push the 30 06.

.338 is really overkill for deer unless you're looking to turn the meat into Swiss cheese and make your shoulder feel like someone hit you with a steel beam.

For elk I use 7mm and for deer I like .243 and .270 because of the low recoil and fast second shot follow up if I didn't do my job right on the first shot.
