Just picked up a new rifle for the ole' lady. She was looking for something with a little more smack than her old .243, but didn't want the teeth jarring recoil of many of the larger rifles in our safe. I decided on the Savage 11FYCAK youth model in .308. We swapped out the youth stock for a longer one. The rifle comes with a synthetic stock, accutrigger, and Savages' twist on/ off muzzle break. Once I got the gun home I decided to see what kind of accuracy the little rifle had. I mounted a Nightforce 4.5-24X50mm scope on it that usually sits atop one of my bench guns. Went to the range and was impressed to say the least. The gun ate every type of ammunition I threw at it, and shot right around 1.5 MOA with military surplus ammo. Here is where it gets good. I loaded the detachable box magazine with 168 grain Sierra Match-kings. Re-zeroed the gun. Shooting 4 5-shot groups the gun averaged .67" at the 100 yard mark. Pretty good for an out of the box youth rifle, huh? I thought so. I tried pushing the limits a little on the range and had decent success out to 600 yard mark. After 300 yards the best I could do was about 2 MOA. All in all a good buy for under $550.00. The wife loved the low recoil of the gun with the break on. I however still have a ringing in my ears. To anyone looking for a gun for a youth or recoil sensitive individual, this is it.
