I'm looking a new deer gun for next year. Here in Iowa we can only use rifles in the January antler-less season and are limited to shotguns and muzzle loaders for the other seasons. I like muzzleloaders, but the only one that I have right now is an iron sighted side lock.

I want something for longer shots that I can scope and expect to be somewhat accurate.I used to have a modern inline muzzleloader and I know that they will do that just fine. but the ultra slug hunter has piped my interest in slug guns (I already have a single shot NEF that I could have fitted with this barrel).

What kind of practical range do you guys see with rifled barrel slug guns? is 150 yards doable? How do they compare to the range of a sabot shooting muzzleloader?

With a rifled barrel and a good scope, 150 is definately doable with a slug gun. Be careful of your scope selection though. Slug guns are hell on scopes and mounts. Steel rings, quality scope. Don't skimp or you'll likely not hold zero.

Watched a buddy of mine smoke a beautiful 8 pointer with his 870 slug gun at 212 yards. The buck didn't even take a step.

My dad hunts with an 1187 with a cantilever slug barrel. With Hornady SST's it is really accurate.
I had a Ultra Slug hunter in 12 gauge and it was very accurate with the SST's as well Remington copper solids, but it is extremely heavy IMHO.

(I already have a single shot NEF that I could have fitted with this barrel).

The ultra comes with a Monte-Carlo stock so if you use a scope you might need to add a cheek pad.

100 yards is my limit with a 20 gauge ultra.

I like my Mossberg 500 with a added rifled barrel that the scope mounts
to the barrel. You can change barrels an its always zeroed. I've shot out to
100 yards with 1 oz. Foster Type Slugs with great accuracy. With the sabots
I'm sure 150 yards would be no problem....my scope is a 40.00 Tasco that has stayed zeroed during 9 seasons...don't figure right...
