Hey, not all of us are blessed with 20/20 vision.

I guess we should limit shooters to just people who don't need glasses or contacts. Would that make you happy? And we should discourage anyone who is new to the sport from participating. Yeah, that's a great idea!
 
The man holding the rifle ought to be clean-shaven and dressed like a detective who is style-conscious but not fussy.;)

That wasn't the rifle he used! He used iron sights. Some people used scopes, others red dot or occluded eye sights. You try picking up rifle at age 73 and see how well you like peep sights.
 
I'm not trying to disparage any one individual, but at the Appleseed I attended a Rifleman's patch was achieved on the first day with a scoped and target barrel equipped 10/22. The shooter appeared to be in his early 40s. IMHO, this is simply too easy to do on a 25 meter range, and it just seems outside of the spirit and contrary to the stated intent of the Appleseed program.

I understand eyesight fades with age, and at 46 my vision certainly isn't what it used to be. That being said I would expect no special dispensation or allowance for any disability in this context. I can either achieve a Rifleman's score on the AQT or I can not. To look at it any other way makes no sense for obvious reasons that I'm not going to state here.
 
Without my glasses I can only hit a"human silouette" at 50 feet, all I see is a big peice of beige paper. With my glasses I can keep the shots within the chest cavity at 50 feet, with a Ruger Mark 3.

With my Mossberg, as long the pellets reach, I'm good at any distance :)

I don't think the target cares whether the bullet was guided by iron sights or by glass, in either case the shooter still has to hold the rifle and correctly pull the trigger, no? If there was some disaster and we needed some citizen's militia to engage whoever bad guys with rifles, I'd prefer they use scopes if that'll make them more accurate. I don't have a problem if Appleseed didn't write it into the rules. (Still haven't made it to one of their shoots but intend to at some point).
 
It's all about having fun, and introducing new shooters to the concept of "marksmanship" instead of "spray and pray."

Heh, heh... Sell that piece of Mattel plastic, and get yourself a real rifle that you can hit something with without having to worry about "follow up" shots...
