Veterans did much to preserve our freedom

The April 9 Gazette obituaries contained a tribute to my neighbor, Lt. Col. Nick Steele who flew 74 combat missions as a P-51 fighter pilot during WWII as well as flying B-47s for Strategic Air Command later in his career. There aren’t too many of us old guys left who were in World War II and we’re going fast, so know that some old geezer who may appear to you as not being too sharp anymore, may in fact be a genuine hero who did more for you than you’ll ever know. Another neighbor, Col. Mal Nurnberg, who flew combat missions in WWII and Vietnam wrote the following poem as a tribute to Nick.
His death is very tragic, it is past all denying,
both for us the living and him the dying.
This, the thought that comforts me, that in some rarer air,
I know he leveled off, and safely landed there.
I salute them both.

I believe I'll have to send a letter to Mr. Lund expressing my condolances and unwavering gratitude.
