I've been hearing about this or that undermining the RKBA for quite some time. I hit a funny thread the other day.

http://www.midcoast.com/~pilkguns/bbs/messages/46322.html

One of my friends commented:

There is nothing funny about this... The man has hit on what will some day
outlaw guns in America, its insurance. One day I will not be able to obatin
home onwers insurance because of my guns, and since I have to have
insurance, I got a problem. One gun club I belonged to had its incurance
got from 500 a year to over 5000 a year, and not even for the same level of
coverage... Insurance companies have a major say in everything here, but it's all behind the scenes, and money talks. It has nothing to do with guns, it's all about money.

Is it really so bad?

The day that a person cannot get homeowners insurance because of his guns, i will be starting my own insurance company that allows it. I'll make a fortune.

Dinking with RKBA via insurance is a play directly from the UN civvy disarmament playbook.

This is actually a fascinating thing.

Insurance companies generally make solid business decisions based on actuarial realities, rather than hype.

This strongly suggests a factor in play that is not to be found in the actuarial tables.

Come on. With all of the litigation and reaching legal theories, and new requirements to "lock" up firearms, and front-loading direct liability, etc....

Did you think the insurance companies would say .....nah, let's wait until we are sued?

Look at the mold issue in California. There are very few cases/claims, but State Farm is taking "no new policies" in California because of future liability.

As long as guns, and not people, are criminalized, then we will continue to get squeezed.

I have never locked up my guns. I refused. I gun-proofed my children. I want them to have access. I want easy access.

But guess what? All it takes is one guest (usually young) to stumble across something and screw with it...and boom, you have a lawsuit that could bankrupt.

Remember, gun owners are a minority. As BIG insurance moves away from homeowner coverage for gun owners, some other small/new company will fill the niche.

Ok, so why do you have to have insurance again? Is there a legal obligation to have it?

I realize its a handy thing to have, but my dad's house hasnt needed it in 20 years. I dont think its 100% necessary, but it is 100% nice to have a security blanket like insurance.

If all else fails, you dont own any firearms. Anyone that you deem has a "Need To Know" will know, and anyone who doesnt (like insurance) wont. That is what the NRA gun insurance is for.:)

Yeah - you have to have it on your house.

The reason is - if someone slips on your lawn and conks on your porch, they can sue you and possibly take your house.

Well, if you owe on the house, the home could be sold and the victim possibly paid before the lein holder - not good for the mortgage co.

Anyway - State Farm told me they cover up to $2500 in firearms - if I had more, it just had to be documented.

I doubt insurance will get to crazy - if they do, there will be a new business market and SOMEONE will go after it to make a buck.

Be careful here, folks: telling your insurance company you don't have guns (if they should ask) when you actually do is fraud, and could invalidate your coverage.
Methinks the NRA could probably start a pretty profitable insurance subsidiary if the big guys start denying coverage to gunowners. And you wanna talk lawsuit? How 'bout a class action suit by legal gunowners against the first company to do so? :fire:

New York City is in the process of doing this

There is a bill before the city council to require all gun owners to have and maintain liability insurance. The act is designed to re route gun control from the legislature to the private sector. The bill will also ban anyone who does not own or rent a property under their name, thus eliminating most young gun owners.

They are also planning on exporting the idea to other states where getting gun control passed into law is becoming a problem. The idea is that people will willing impose gun control on themselves in order to get lower premiums, thus creating a national, expanded ban on AWs, gun lock requirement, # of guns limitation etc.

This is not an exageration. I was at the Public Safety Committee meeting. My friends look at the trend. Gun control failed in congress so they went to the courts. When S659 passes the courts will be ruled out. So the only place left to go is the private sector, namely the insurance companies. this is the new trend. Prepare for it.

Help get S659 passed and beat the AW Ban
