I am looking to switch my homeowners insurance policy and I wanted to increase my firearms coverage to cover all of my firearms but the insurance company wants to have them appraised and thus they would have a list of everything I own. I have some fundamental issues with providing anyone a list like that so I would rather not. Due to this I was thinking about buying a separate firearms insurance policy and wanted to see if anyone here has one or experience with any providers.

I know the NRA provides some basic coverage:

$2,500 of ArmsCare coverage with your NRA membership. This plan covers insured firearms, air guns, bows and arrows against theft, accidental loss, and damage.

From the ArmsCare website it looks like their coverage is cheaper than I would get with my homeowners policy anyways and they don't need serial numbers. Has anyone used them before? Ever made a claim? Any other alternatives?

Any advice is appreciated.

I would guess that your guns are worth more than $2500 if you are wanting to insure them. I had to inventory and take pictures of tools that I wanted to insure. Rollaway, side, and top box full of tools. Major pita. Do it.

I have my insurance through these guys: http://www.collectinsure.com/
I'd rather not say exactly what my personal collection is worth but I will say their rates are very very reasonable. On average for every $20,000 it's about $10 a month.

edit: I have no affiliation with them other than they are my insurance provider

My entire collection isn't anything too impressive but $2,500 won't cover it so I would want additional coverage. I have experienced a break in in the past and I know that I want to be covered in case something happens. I keep everything in a bolted down safe so something pretty serious would have to happen for them to be stolen in the first place, I just want an extra safety net.

The company that I mention in my above post actually requires that you have a safe. It's good for other collectibles as well. My father inlaw uses them for his gun and coin collection.

NRA; firearm insurance....

I signed up for a NRA membership. I also got the included firearm insurance policy but never filed a formal claim.
You might want to check www.guninsurance.com . They mainly work with FFL & small business owners but they might have a suggestion or 2 about private collections/gun insurance.
I honestly do not own or store enough firearms to justify added insurance at this point. :(

My general experience with homeowners insurance is that most providers will cover up to $2,500 in firearms. With State Farm for example I can buy a rider policy for additional coverage.

Everyone's case is different. I finally, for our situation, opted for a safe lagged to the concrete deck. That has my guns (the higher dollar ones anyway), Kathy's jewelery, and all important papers and documents. Then for a few bucks an added a home brew fire sprinkler system. While nothing is perfect this serves my needs well. Getting the safe out of here they will need to remove part of the front of the house. :)

There are also, as mentioned, insurance companies that will insure firearms and that even specialize in firearms. They can be considered as an option.

State Farms $2500 limit is for theft. Firearms are covered for all other perils up to the limit of your personal property coverage.

Not all the time. MY insurance specifically says they are NOT. I also had to sign something saying I do not have "Assault weapons" in the house. It didn't define assault weapons. But you bet if I file a claim for a damaged AR and AK after a fire it will be denied. I have the NRA insurance and a seperate policy for damage. My guns are locked in a safe bolted to the concrete pad foundation of the house.

Historic Firearms mentioned earlier is also called Eastern Insurance. It is a two person operation in a Bank. Jack is the Man.

No serials. Covers ammo. Better prices than the other companies above.

You can have a deductible. I take the equivalent of one gun to save premuim.

BTW: The "NRA" coverage only comes into force if you Request it. It is free, but you don't have it automatically.

Farmers Insurance like most home owners policies provide some coverage for all lost items with a limit. Mine has a per-gun limit and a maximum claim limit. I added an addendum to my policy that extends that limit and it only cost me a few additional dollars. It would be less if I have a safe, but my small home will not accommodate a safe. Might put one in the garage one of these days. Above all, you should photograph all of your guns and accessories and keep a current list.

According to my agent (Allstate) my homeowners policy covers all perils up to the limits of my coverage.
Could be. I would have to read it myself in the policy instead of taking a salesman's word for it for peace of mind.

That's funny, I have fifteen priceless Picassos in my attic but I don't want anyone to have a list of them. Think they'll be covered?

Generally coverage for specific items will require you to identify the items. So you either risk having them not covered or you risk the list leaking to the Gubmint. You choose.

I have a State Farm rider. It covers the exact value of my firearms and has no deductible. I voluntarily sent them a list of all serial numbers, value and accessories. The rate, I consider reasonable.
If your collection is valued more than $2500, I highly recommend a rider. A deductible would be the cost of one firearm.

I just went through this ordeal this past summer. We ended up with Safeco. Tried Allstate and State Farm but both were much higher. They asked me for a list of firearms which I already had with numbers. They wanted to know what I valued them at. In my spread sheet I put what I paid, where, when, accessories and what I think it is worth now. Gave it to the guy. I am insured for any kind of loss, not just theft so if I am showing them to someone and they drop one, it is insured. Overall with the firearm rider I still save quite a bit of money with additional coverage all around. I did find it pays to shop around and ask lots of questions and go back and forth because one company will say something that I needed to ask the first company. It took a while but was worth it.

Read the policy from wherever you buy and make sure it's fire and theft with replacement value coverage. Insurance companies are not in business to help you. And they all think everything decreases in value over time.
$2500US wouldn't cover the replacement of my handguns alone.
