RL-22 and 243's

REL-22 is fine with 100gr. bullets and heavier. Burn rate is close to 4831. It will give decent velocity with lower pressures as a rule in the 243, but there are better performing powders for overall use in the 243. You do need more than a 20" barrel to take advantage of rel-22.

RL22 is a bit slower than IMR4831, and either is good for 100gr and higher bullets in the 243.

Burn rates of a few powders mentioned; number at left is place on my burn rate chart.

I got my best results with the last .243 I had. It was a Stevens M200 w/22" bbl.

The most accurate load I found was the Nosler #4 manual max load, and noted as the most accurate also. Instead, I used the Hornady 100gr BTSP.
It is a bit "soft" for close range shots.

Velocity was 3,050, and it would deliver 0.780" groups (5-shots) at 100yds. Scope was a 6-18x BSA w/mil-dot. (yeah, no great loss!)
I used Winchester cases, Federal 210 primers, Seated the bullets to the edge of the cannelure, over the Nosler max. of 42.5gr of RL-22. (chronographed, temp. was 65deg.F).

Sadly, my brother left it lying in the case in back of my pickup. A week later, I called him up (he had flown back to NV from GA). I asked where he put it, as I couldn't find it. He said "look in the back of your truck". I said, guess what, IT'S GONE !!!!

He hasn't been back to GA since !!!!

Rl-22 may be fine for 100gr bullets and heavier, but it is strongly advised that such a slow powder NOT be used for bullets any lighter in the .243 win case.

Der verge, why is it not advisable to use RL-22 for bullets lighter than 100 grains in a .243? I am curious.

Out of the Hornady 3rd edition loading manual.......(I know it is "vintage" but the info remains true)

"Slow burning powders such as 4350 and Win 785 are not safe when loaded with reduced charges. Lighter charges of slower burning powders often cause detonation"

4350 is a bit faster than, and 785 is quite comparable to RL-22. Just make sure you have good, reliable info, and exercise caution with -22 in .243

Der verge I misunderstood your post. Thanks for the response. I used slow powder in my .243 but I used a lot of it. I never used RL22 in .243, but I love it in my .270.

Remember that burning rate changes with application. (ie: the case it's put in).
The .243 has a fairly large expansion ratio, or conversly case capacity to bore capacity ratio.

I "suspect" the burn rate chart. Based on the particular lot's I've had, I'd put RL22 either just before or just after H4831, and a bit slower than IMR4831. Or, a LOT faster than the chart indicates.

From my experience with the .257wbyMag, and .300RUM, WC860 which is very, very similar to the old H870 is somewhat faster than H50BMG and AA8700.(based on pressure/velocity/charge weights). Also, RL22 is somewhat faster than IMR7828, about like H4831, and a good bit slower than H4350.

In my .30/06,with 180gr bullets, RL22 @ 60.0gr IS the max. At 61.0 I get sticky extraction, burnished case heads, and slightly flattned primers. At 60.0gr, everything is "hunky dory", and accuracy is phenomenal, and velocity is over 2,800fps. (24"BBL) However, I can't get enough H4831 in the case to much top 2,700fps, and pressures are mild (also 60.0gr). So, which is faster here??

If I were not to use RL22 in the .243, it would be either H4350 or IMR4350, depending on which gave the best accuracy. Though my brother "swears" by IMR4831 in his .243. But thats with his lot#, and his Rifle..........

I've seen good results with Varget, RL15, H4895, and IMR4064 with 80gr and lighter bullets, but, neither will come within 150fps of RL22, AND deliver the accuracy I got with "MY RIFLES".........with the 100gr bullet !
