I loaded up some RMR 124 JHP, COL of 1.1, 4.0 Grains of HP-38 using date for W231 (same as hp-38) from the Lyman 50th. 1.1 fits all my 9mm pistols doing a plunk test.

Today, I was perusing Hodgons' online to look for some 147 load data (I have some Berry's) and saw under the Hornady 125 GR "HAP" data for HP-38 that they have a starting load of 2.8 and a max load of 3.3 at a COL of 1.069 for this bullet (the HAP).

Now in the past, I have always felt pretty comfortable with load data based on bullet weight, similar bullet type and similar COL, using published recipes, but, this one threw me off a bit.

I just double checked my manuals because I was thinking OMG, did I load .7 above max? (seems to me a HAP is just a copper jacketed hp effectively).

Lyman shows a 124 JHP at 3.8 to 4.5 with a col of 1.060 for W231.
Hornady 9th does not show a 231 or hp-38 load for 124s
Hodgon (2015 manual) shows hp-38 with a max of 4.8 for a 125 sie FMJ at 1.090

Am I reading something wrong? Is this a misprint on the Hogdon website? if so, loading down a 124 to 3.3 (.5 below other load data) could also be potentially dangerous if the bullet didn't clear the barrel.

Is there something special about HAP rounds that requires they be loaded down?

Anyone else loading hp-38 and RMR 124 JHPs that cares to share the data they use? I just want to be sure I am not messing up here.

Can I get a sanity check here from the good folks at the High Road?

Yep, different bullet. Hornady Action Pistol bullets are designed for target shooting and not designed for expansion/SD uses. No "expansion threshold velocity" needed and are designed for accuracy, feeding and performance on targets (steel, reactive, etc,). Different bullet, different needs, different load data.

I use Nosler data for my RMR 125 JHP load (I had some Nosler bullets and some RMR bullets so I compared them visually, with my mics and scales. I have no idea if they are the exact same but the Nosler load data has worked quite well for maybe 800-1,000 9mm loads)...

I used Vectan's published data for 124gr Speer Gold Dot to work up a load for the RMR 124gr JHP with BA-9. For what it is worth, velocities on my chronograph were right in step with Vectan's data.

Naturally, those results are only indicative of my feeble efforts. Start low and work up.

Assuming that what you describe as the RMR 124 JHP is the RMR 124gr MPR, I think you're in a pretty safe range for HP-38.

I've loaded the RMR 124gr MW over 4.3grs -4.5grs...but I'm seating them out to 1.114" - 1.125" OAL (depending on the gun I'm shooting them through)
