Dear Folks who have traveled to the Grand Canyon, AZ residents, indeed anyone who has knowledge on the topic-
Please pardon me asking, but
I am looking for some guidance on carrying legalities in AZ and some specific locales in particular.
I know I could ask the proprietors (see below) directly, but i am trying to keep some relative anonymity first by asking you.
Specifically,
I am planning a trip to drive from TX, through New mexico, and to AZ and arrive at the town of Williams, AZ; (staying at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel)and from there board the Grand Canyon Railway train for a trip to the South Rim of the Canyon; for an overnight at Maswik Lodge, which i assume is inside the border of the National Park, then back again.

The package is detailed here: http://www.thetrain.com/packages_canyonexpress2night.cfm
So I know i am legal in TX and AZ, in general; I am more concerned about the train ride and entering the Canyon.
Though not federal, would any of you know if the Railway conforms to federal regs and forbids ccw (I assume they do) and/or forbids a weapon in carry-on luggage (seems likely, but who knows..)?? Also, since that train enters GCyn National Park; is it even legal to bring a firearm into the Park in checked baggage?
I know it is illegal to carry a firearm in any Nat'l Park, but can you have one on the grounds: in your car, or in my case, in a hotel room?

The Railway is an independent, non-AMTRAK operated, train and again, i thought I would ask you all first before I email the Railway and take the chance of some crafty person flagging my name for the one-and-only luggage inspection they have ever done.

Also, we then plan to drive down to Flagstaff and use it as a home-base for doing trips to things within an hour or so of Flagstaff. i.e. Crater Park, Sedona perhaps, etc etc
So any info for a person who would carry everywhere if it were up to him (me) that you would share, like places that are cool to visit and allow carry, i would most appreciate!

Thanks in advance for your time!

I've legally carried an unloaded, cased firearm into Grand Canyon National Park many times, in my vehicle or camper. Can't help you with the train, though.

legal

Enfield,
Thanks for the reply!
When you say you legally carried an unloaded, locked firearm into Canyon goounds; can you poinnt me to a reference I can use to prove its all legal.
I have been ALL OVER every nook and cranny of the GCyn website, and even searched for all public Director's Memo's, and that particular issue is mentioned NOWHERE.

I was mostly wondering if I can even bring a firearm on the train or onto the ground at all, even if I had to disassemble and lock it up.

As you mentioned, seems onto the grounds is legal; and i need to hunt down a reference. Question on the Railway remains and i'd bet I need to just get lucky and find someone here who either has taken the trip or works for the Railway. Its worth a shot.

Happy New Year,

You are good to go in NM as well. Your car is an extension of your home, and you can carry concealed in it, even without a permit. If you have a TX CCW it is honored in NM.

Can't help you with the train, but "concealed means ..........".

Carl,

give me the email addy of the train co. and let me ask. i can say im a CHL instructor and a student posed the question to me, if you prefer anonymity.

Good info so far!

Thanks to all who replied.
Spreadfire, thank you, Sir!
Thanks for the link to the FOPA- I had been looking for that in general.
AZ and NM both have reciprocity with TX, so that's good. I just need the details on any local restrictions, restaurant or gas stations especially since I will need both for the driving portions of the vacation; and of course that darn train...

Thx again!

awesome!

Wldsguy, that was GREAT! Here's the meat of it as it applies to my question(s):
_____________________________________________________
"§ 2.4 Weapons, traps and nets.
(a)(1) Except as otherwise provided in this section and parts 7 (special regulations) and 13 (Alaska regulations), the following are prohibited:
(i) Possessing a weapon, trap or net
(ii) Carrying a weapon, trap or net
(iii) Using a weapon, trap or net

(2) Weapons, traps or nets may be carried, possessed or used:...

(3) Traps, nets and unloaded weapons
may be possessed within a temporary lodging or
mechanical mode of conveyance
when such implements are rendered
temporarily inoperable or are
packed, cased or stored in a manner
that will prevent their ready use...

(g) The regulations contained in this section apply, regardless of land ownership, on all lands and waters within a park area that are under the legislative jurisdiction of the United States..."

Too bad I can't find part 7 (special regulations) as mentioned in § 2.4(a)(1) above.

Thanks!

Too bad i cant find

ok

So Part 7: special regulations deals specifically with the Ozarks Riverways

So unless you are especially permitted as in Alaska, or in desiganted hunting, shooting, etc areas specifically named in the subsection; the regular civilian...

1. CAN
a. possess and transport an unloaded and, locked up and/or disassembled and inaccessable firearm in a vehicle, or hotel(*), or seasonally occupied dwelling; and
can posess a loaded firearm in a seasonally occupied dwelling.

and,
2. CANNOT
carry or possess a loaded weapon in a National Park (except those with summer homes and whatnot).

(*) another question: a hotel or lodge or other rented room is a temporary dwelling, and so seems would not be allowed since the only time a loaded weapon is allowed is, " For purposes of this subparagraph only, the term ‘‘residential dwelling’’ means a fixed housing structure which is either the principal residence of its occupants, or is occupied on a regular and recurring basis by its occupants as an alternate residence or vacation home ".
But is that so?
Or is the hotel room considered your home legally for the term of the rental (i.e. one day, etc.)?????? (as it is in some cities)

Anybody know?

One really bad thing about NM is the fact that you can't carry anywhere that has a liquor license. :cuss:

So, make sure that you "pay at the pump" and tone down your dining habits and you should be OK. Also, most Wally Worlds sell booze, and it doesn't matter that they are package only, it is a felony to carry any place with the liquor license. We really need to get that changed. Possibly with something like the 51% rule that Texas has or a requirement to be 0.0 BAC while carrying. I could live with either one.

My family and i have taken the train up to the Grand Canyon, it was a great trip! Once you get to the canyon you can check in, but your luggage is brought to your room later, so if you put whatever in your luggage be aware it isn't always in your control or who has access to it.

whoa!

Sistema1927,
YIKES!!! Now THAT is good info to know! Geez, that eliminates a ton of places, doesn't it!
Any other info like that I should know?
For cryin' out loud...

1911Ron,
Thanks. I am really looking foward to the trip. I did see the part about my luggage being out of my control for awhile. That is bad enough, but even worse when i potentially would have something very 'steal-able' inside. It would indeed be better if I could have it disassembled, locked and with me on the train.

Hoepfully, this info search will be fruitful.
