Well the wife wants to take a trip to New England this month, including the ferry ride to Nantucket, and a loop through Maine. Since we are from Illinois there is no problem with not carrying concealed, but I will have my .41mag with us. It will be locked in a case unloaded and locked in the trunk while we are on the road. We don't have a route mapped out yet, and I will check with packing.org also, I just wanted to hear from my fello THRers, more of a personal thing. I have looked at packing and there is good information, but people who live in these areas know more about what the situation is. Thanks, Jim.

The ferry ride to Nantucket is great, although a bit long. I'm afraid you are going to hit the tourist season but it will still be nice. My advice is to leave your vehicle on the mainland, get walk-on tickets, and rent a pair of mopeds to get around the island. Probably much cheaper that way. Plus it's easier to get on the ferry. Plan on leaving EARLY in the morning.

If you keep your pistol locked away and out of sight you should be okay. If you have a choice I would suggest an semi-auto pistol which you could disassemble and hide the parts in different locations in your car when you part. Just a personal thing. I have had a car stolen while I was at work late one night (I had out of state plates).

You may want to check the Mass Gun Owners Action League (GOAL) for more information.

Hope you enjoy the trip!

I am from PA and if you no have CCL do not pack here. Do visit you can see some great country side here and in Southern NY. Some of the best White tail deer hunting in the fall is had in Northern PA. Great gun shop in Clearfield I think is called Grice's off of route 80 in north mid state PA.

Hey, you'll be visiting multiple shades of gunowner hell.

You live in Illinois, and you'll be traversing New York and Massachusetts.

My advice?

Stay out of New Jersey no matter what.

I hate to say this, but there's a very good reason why they dress their state police in uniforms that are VERY reminiscent of mid-1930s Nazi SA uniforms. Ernst Rohem would have been so proud.

If you keep your pistol locked away and out of sight you should be okay.
If you are caught in MA with a handgun, and no permit, you will quite likely be subject to a mandatory 1 year prison sentence.

The only exemptions in MA law that I can find for carrying guns in your car as you travel through the communewealth is for long guns, unloaded and locked in the trunk, and/or a secure, locked container. Or for people possessing a temporary license to carry. They also have one for people that possess a (non-concealed)handgun license in their home state, and are in MA for a registered competition, or for those employed in the making of a film or other theatrical production. Looks like Sean Penn would be given a pass for guns in the car. Good ol' MA! :barf:

When you go to packing.org, pay close attention to the section called.
Carrying without a permit
They strongly suggest that anyone travelling in MA obtain a temporary license to carry. They are $50, and are supposed to be good for one year. If you can get one.

Under "Peaceable Journey" law, they refer you back to:
Carrying without a permit
I think that is packing's way of saying "God bless and keep you." All I can add to that is... AMEN!

last i knew, in mass. anyhow,,,

you could travel with your guns (any kind) locked in the trunk, unloaded, etc. as long as you only stopped at your destination or passed completely through without stopping.

no mcdonalds, no gas stops, no wee breaks.

point A to point B.

that doesn't mean i havent stopped enroute occsaionally but it is taking a chance with a mandatory year if you get caught

and something tells me point B could only be a range but don't quote me on it.

i only go to mass. for the day to go to a particular range so i'm not sure if stopping at a motel for the night, eg, is allowed.

i don't know, offhand what conn.'s rule on out of staters is, i never had to worry about it.

i know they don't do much in the way of reciprocity.

i don't leave ct anymore cause i cant take my gun with me anywhere.

m

you could always stop in springfield at the (dare i say it?? ) SMITH AND WESSON plant and say hello to all the guns, pop off a few at their range (they let you rent quite a few different models for $25 each, with ammo and targets included)

and you could take care of those other travel necessities while youre there.

theres a drive through burger king a couple of blocks away:barf: :D
