Congrats on the RIA! Yes, they're good guns, you'll be happy! Especially if it's like the one pictured right above. Those have Novak-style dovetails, and Novak low-profile tritium night sights should fit right in. I have three RIA's and love them dearly.

The ejected casings hitting you in the forehead, may be an indication of a weak recoil spring. My RIA had the same problem, and replacing the spring sent the casings sailing well over my head. (My SA XD-9 exhibited the exact same problem, and I fixed that gun the same way, with a 1911 Wolf 16# spring.)

I found that the RIA weighs a few more ounces than my other 5" 1911s. It seems to help tame recoil a bit. But if you want loose that weight, I recommend using an aluminum mainspring housing, and replacing the rod in the recoil spring.

Your gun probably came with an 8rd magazine with a plastic bottom. I have a prejudice against mags with plastic bottoms, as my brain sees the plastic as the weak point. FWIW, the mag has always worked fine.

Enjoy your RIA, and don't worry about honest wear and tear on your gun. You'll own other 1911s later in life (at double the price), and you'll be thankful you learned the ropes (and possibly make some mistakes) on this one.

Yes mine looks like stolivar's tactical but with different grips. I will have a picture posted eventually. Thanks for the help with the sights but I am not changing them yet. My RIA is the only 1911 I have ever shot and I am now in love with the pistol and will definitely get another. Maybe I will buy a 3.5" but that will be in the future.

those grips are old

They came off of my old 1911 that I have had for over 20 years.

At my local shop they have a new RIA for that price but it is nickel plated and in .38 Super

Hey Savage116, congrats on your new RIA - seems you
have the Tactical - The Tactical has the Dovetail cuts for
the sights. THese Dovetail cuts are perpendicular to the
bore axis, or another way to put it are across the slide's width
Regular Novak sights have a white dot front and the rear has
white dots on each side of the rear sight notch. The Novak
style sights on the RIA Tactical are simply plain, right?

I've had one since 2003 and love it. Plain ol' 5" GI model.

The rule of thumb that I've followed is to put 500 rounds through it before you do anything to it other than clean it. Breaks in the gun sort of like driving a new vehicle sedately for the first 500 miles, changing the oil, and then still driving it sedately until 3000 miles. When I first got mine the original 8 round Novak mag was troublesome and I got a bunch of original 7 rounders but after several hundred rounds that Novak mag hasn't given me any troubles.
Have thought about putting a MSH with a lanyard loop on it though.

The guys over in the "Other 1911's" area on 1911forum have always been helpful and Ivan and a few other from Armscor in Nevada frequent that site. Good folks.
