Hey,

There is an article in the new Shotgun News "special" issue (the one that has the fancy color pages and cover) about the 38 Super round. Not knowing much about the round, I decided to read up on it.
In the article the author talks about buying a Rock Island Armory in 38 Super and he specifically says that they are available now in that caliber. Every time I have seen a Rock Island for sale in one of the gun rags it has been a 45 ACP, never a 38 Super. He doesn;t talk about converting it over, he says that he bought it that was and they are made in the Phillipines.
Has anyone heard of the Rock Island being sold in 38 Super? Has anyone ever seen one?
Post details if you know anything about them.

Thanks

Nala

Bluesbear,

That website and announcement are merely from SARCO, a former distributor of RIA's in the United States.

REST ASSURED that RIA's in all configurations are still very much available from Armscor's US reps (Armscor Precision in Las Vegas NV) and a few other new distributors, and likely at lower prices than SARCO wants to charge.

Indeed, IIRC, I was told the falling out between Twin Pines (owner of the RIA brand) and SARCO was over pricing. SARCO wanted to raise prices, and Twin Pines refused (something to do with honoring a pricing agreement Twin Pines has with Armscor, which is the actual manufacturer of these well-regarded pistols --although Twin Pines throws in Novak sights and non-Armscor mags to allow for a superior weapon).

A quick search for RIA pistols ought to turn up new distributors.
Alternatively, you can look at Armscor's own-brand line of 38Super 1911's.

hth :)

I thought Armscor was in Pahrump Nv.Home of Art Bell!! Twin Pines is in the Philipines,Art's wife is Philipino,..I think there's some sort of conspiricy here.Maybe the greys have their little hands in it? The RIA's are an "out of this world" bargain 45!!!

berettaman,

Maybe there's a cultural gap concealing some well-meant humor here? ;)
'Pahrump' is lost on me ...or is that an actual town/city?

Anyway, the address I have on file for Armscor's US presence is:
Armscor Precision, Inc. – U.S.A.
5329 South Cameron St., Suite 110
Las Vegas, Nevada 89118
U.S.A.

Armscor's headquarters is in Marikina, Philippines.

denfoote,

The Armscor website hasn't been updated in quite awhile, but you're right.
Pardon my brain poop.
:D

I've seen quite a number of Armscor 1911's in .38 Super around here, and have for some time, but these must have been conversions ---I'd always just assumed they came straight from Armscor

Even one of the newest (albeit once-removed) online iterations of their pistol lineup bears out what you've posted: http://www.productguidephil.com/~Armscor/products.html

Thanks for the correction!

The gun shop I frequent has nice shiny one for $400. I thought it a bit pricey, but still seemed like a good gun. I compared the trigger to a Colt Commander, the Commander had a nicer trigger. I would have been more interested if it were closer to the $350 mark. I think he still has it, I looked at it about 6 months ago. I think it would make a dang good started gun for someone to tinker with.

Horge,
my RIA's frame is stamped on the underside of the dust cover:
API-PAHRUMP NV
TWIN PINES,PHILS.
thus the reference to Art and his lovely wife Ramona.
He currently owns and runs KNYE 92.1 FM in Pahrump.

Art Bell was/is a latenight radio talkshow host on the Premier Radio Network that discusses UFO's,Paranormal Activity,Government Conspiracys.:scrutiny:

Ahh.. got it.
Never heard of Art Bell in these islands.

So API (Armscor Precision Inc?) is in Pahrump?
And also in Las Vegas?
You're right.

Call in Art Bell :D

Armscor may have its actual import/assembly in Pahrump, while its front office is in Las Vegas.

For anyone else listening in, here's the tale and trail of pistol manufacture and retail out of the Philippines:

++++

Armscor is the mother of all firearms and ammunition manufacturers in the Philippines (and nearly all of Southeast Asia). A lot of companies worldwide subcontract manufacturing of their stuff to Armscor. Some subcontract just a few parts, while others order virtually the whole firearm.

Charles Daly in the US has had Armscor manufacture its 1911 line from the start.
Twin Pines in the Philippines also has Armscor manufacture its "Rock Island Armory" 1911 line.
There are others, but they don't make it to US shores.
On top of all this Armscor sells its own lines of 1911's, rifles, revolvers etc.

Nothing wrong or unusual with subcontracting or taking subcontracts.
Kahr and Taurus manufacture for NAA, the latter manufacturing NONE of the Guardian's parts, right? (Heck, I just found out that even cartridge-makers like PMC subcontract some manufacturing to Armscor.)

Armscor brand, CD brand 1911 and Rock Island Armory brand pistols are all made by Armscor.
Now, CD obviously has a US presence.
Armscor has long had a Las Vegas office.
Twin Pines was relatively new to the firearm "manufacturing" business, and initially tied up with Sarco to get its fine line of pistols into the US market. They have since found a more secure distribution system, and have begun sourcing some parts (sights, magazines) from US manufacturers.

Anyway getting back to the .38 Super.
Twin Pines definitely markets a Rock Island Armory .38 Super.
It is definitely manufactured by Armscor,
...hence the technical existence of 'Armscor' .38 Super 1911's.
:)

To make things even more confusing, check out Armscor's recent printed ads in some gun rags: they now advertise an Armscor "Rock Island" line of 1911's. The line used to be marketed as the GI series, and if this isn't about marketing Twin Pines' Rock Island Armory line, I don't know how this affects relations with Twin Pines, although Armscor really does have the majority claim to RIA's favorable reputation --and Twin Pines have no one else to subcontract to. Being Filipino, I tend to suspect everything between Twin Pines and Armscor is as planned, long beforehand.

It's a good thing Armscor has taken a renewed interest in oversas civilian firearms retail. For a long time they were like Colt seemed to be some years back --getting fat and lazy on fixed contracts. I feel direct civvy retail and the fierce competion therein are what drives pistolmakers harder towards quality, reliability and affordability.

In the end, if its shoots well and reliably, buy it.
If it's reasonably-priced, so much the better.

postscript: Just to round out the Philippine firearm manufacturing picture,
Shooters Arms Manufacturing (SAM) is another Philippine pistol maker. They do not subcontract major manufacturing jobs to Armscor, but have their own plant in Mandaue City, Cebu. I am not aware that they have an official distributor in the US, though their pistols do get there.

Rock Island .45

Good to see so many folks aware of what I thought might have been a substandard weapon. I bought one of their .45's the other day, but have had a helluva time tryin' to get an owners manual/parts list for it.

Since it isn't like most .45's in you begin to disassemble it by depressing the spring load under the front of the barrel, the Rock Island doesnt seem to work like that.

Anyone know where I can get my hands on a manual?

Much appreciated!

Usually see a couple of RIA .38 Supers at mid to large gun shows here, run $365-400. I'd buy one if it was in the "Tactical" config with better sights & ambi safety. I'm not into .38 Super at present and my first one will not be something I need to change anything on initially.

When/If I get into .38 Super, I'll probably start with a .38 Super upper and a couple of spare mags for my EAA Witness, only about $250 initial outlay and no FFL transfer required.

I've seen several "Rocks" at all the local gun shows from several vendors, including .38 Super ones. I am quite intrigued by a "Tactical" model (in .45) for $489. (The "stripper" model was $389 from the same vendor.) I don't care about the "tactical" appellation, but I do like the better sights and beavertail grip safety, and the extended ambi thumb safety doesn't hurt either.

It is indeed, about 50 miles northwest of Vegas on state route 160, in neighboring Nye County (Vegas is in Clark County). FWIW, Front Sight (the shooting school) is near Pound Rump. ;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pahrump,_Nevada

United sporting Arms in Kentucky was selling brand new RIA .38 Supers for $305.00 + $14.00 shipping (+ FFL fee of $20.00 on my end). I know first hand, since I bought one.

Talk about a deal. I converted mine to 9mm for under $100.00, so I got 2 calibers for under $500.00. Good basic guns to boot. I would do it again.

I have a RIA 38 Super. I liked my RIA 45 GI 1911 so well that I bought the Super. When the weather turns cold, I'll add a beavertail & some other things like I did the the 45. I also ordered a RIA 45 Tactical that is in at the gunshop & waiting for me to bring it home. The 38 Super is the one without the beavertail. It is a good pistol & lot's of fun to shoot. I do my own reoading for it & have found a few that it really likes.

I've seen .45 1911's here in the U.S., and the only other markings on the gun, besides "High Standard" (which was/is a name long associated with .22 target pistols), is "Made in the Phillipines". Safe to assume this also an Armscor product just being imported and sold with an old familiar U. S. company name (like Charles Daly)? If so, it's a very nice buy, as the ones I've seen, which are pretty much mil-spec 1911A1s, go for around $350 to $400.

not too sure on that. I know they make an officer's size gun but no idea about a commander size.

then again you could buy a full size and purchase a commander upper (might need a smith to do some fitting though)
