Background of the story....

When I closed my gun shop down in 2009 I had a number of AR15 lowers in inventory that I transferred to my personal collection. I also had quite a few barrels for AR-15's. I'm finally getting around to finishing them in to rifles for my kids....

Three of the barrels are mid-length HBAR fluted with rifle cut ramps on the barrel extension. Two of the barrels I want to use are mid-length HBAR non-fluted, also without an M4 extension.

I *wanted* to buy M3 flattop uppers (the ones *without* M4 feed ramps), for those three barrels.

I called and talked to Rock River, as I heard they sell true M3 uppers without the M4 feed ramps. The lady I spoke with said that all of their uppers are rifle.

Now... I'm starting to think she didn't understand what I was talking about when I brought up the two different feed ramp types.

Because all 5 of the uppers I ordered arrived today, and they *do* have M4 feed ramps.

I don't want to mess around and cut the barrel ramps, it's impossible to get it to spec due to the geometry and different angles involved.

So... is there any material that I could use to FILL the receiver cuts on the uppers?

Or should I just sell these things and keep looking?

I don't know if RRA even sells non-M4 ramped receivers since "everyone" seems to want that specification. Maybe call them back and ask to talk someone on their technical staff (other than her).

Barring that, sell or trade them. There are a number of receiver makers that don't only offer the M4 cuts...like DPMS, Stag Arms, etc.

Good luck

Why not just call RRA back and tell them you'd like an exchange or a refund since they sent you the wrong product? That would be the most logical solution.

This is what I was thinking too. They sent you the wrong product. Send them back and get a refund.

Restock fee is 20%, and shipping costs to return are non-refundable. They shipped the exact item in my cart - so they didn't get the order wrong, exactly, just had someone answering questions wrong leading in to the sale.

Even if they waive the restock fee I'm still out on an insured shipment of gun parts - which also involves a 2 hour round trip to the nearest UPS depot, fuel, and lots of wasted time.

I could just as easy bring the uppers with me to high power shoots and sell them for what I paid for them without incurring any additional loss.

Been waiting 6 years to build up the lowers I had so it's not like I'm in a big hurry.

Then they are responsible for shipping you the wrong item. It's at least worth a phone call.

Wait..... I thought M4 feed ramps were a good and desirable feature?
Not if the barrel extension ramps are not M4. It creates a step that can cause the bullet to hang up and the OP doesn't want re-cut the ramps.

Will give them a call when time permits. Been really pressed for time lately since one of my employees passed away, had to pick up a lot of extra work I normally don't do.

You can ship these with USPS,and it would be a lot cheaper than UPS. I ship rifle's,and gun parts out all the time, and always use Priority Mail with the USPS.

Not a bad idea, Tx.

I'd completely overlooked the postal service.

M4 cut uppers with rifle extensions don't work. Oops.

It's not impossible or rocket science to cut them, most don't have the specs, equipment, skill, or want to. Changing the extensions is equally problematic because the headspace would need to be set, extensions pinned, and the gas ports are drilled after the job to be in vertical alignment. The existing ports would likely need to be plugged and redrilled.

Better and cheaper to shop for uppers to match than mess with it. Will the vendor accept a return due to their mistake, which you honestly tried to prevent?

Over in the "popular ar15 web pages", there's a section for RRA. One of RRAs tech guys (Steve) is often on there. You might try posting there. He answers questions just like yours.

Bottom line for me would be - simply call them and arrange something. It would be lame if they tried to charge you a 20% restock fee because of some confusing information you got directly from them.

I call it the "aggravation factor." If its less aggravating to deal with it than to fix it, I deal with it.

So, if it was one upper, I'd see about a local trade or something, but five? I'd call RRA. You bought them after receiving wrong information from them. They should waive the restock fee and pick up the shipping, but not eveyone has Brownells customer service...

ADCO will, or at least used to, do things like this. Call them and see if it is cheap enough to get them to recut the ramps.
