My father gave me one of these guns. It is RG24 it says it is a "cal 22 lr". I would like to know if I am using the right ammunition. This is the first gun I have ever shot and I am just learning.

The first box of ammunition I used said
"Super X" "Winchester 22 Long Rifle High Velocity" Hollow point 37grains

The second box of ammunition I have bought says
"Expert 22" "Winchester 22 RF Long Rifle 36 GR" Hollow Point Rimfire Cartridges.

Thanks for any help. I know this is't much of a gun but it's my first starter.

Also what is meant by rifling on the barrel. I tried to look at mine and didnt see any spiraling. It just looked like some straight grooves. Should rifling be easy to see.

Thanks
Brandon

brj1, While not the highest quality gun out there, I had a little RG23 that lasted a surprisingly long time before the trigger spring broke and was too much trouble to fix. I carried it for years in either a hunting jacket or tackle box. Even finished off one ground hog that I shot with a rifle and was crawling toward his hole. I don't think it's going to blow up but don't expect a lot. Any .22 LR cartridge with the exception of Stingers should work OK.

Welcome to THR

These guns were among some of the cheapest revolvers made the quality of metal used is not that great.
They have a bad reputation as they often end up being used in crimes or carried by less than law abiding people so in some peoples minds they get painted with a broad brush.

If it is all you have its a stepping stone up to a better pitsol use what you have and save what you can and when its possible put it away as a keepsake.

I would keep it since it came from family but I would not use it allot only enough to become familiar with pistol shooting marksmanship and safety all the while saving for a good new or used better quality firearm.

Many people I have known living in poor neighborhoods simply could not afford a mid or high quality pistol so in the end a pistol in hand beats throwing rocks or praying while waiting for 911 to hopefully arrive.

As the old saying goes I would rather be missed by a .44 than hit by a .22 and with the price of .22LR ammunition being so cheap practice does not cost much.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth the price was right and one can learn from having it, any gun is better than none.

Take care and best of luck.:)

brj1, welcome to forum and shooting revolvers. Last year my bud gave me his FIE wheelie, which is in about the same "underpar" boat as your ROHM. Fact is, I just could not afford the gun I wanted so I used it for several months before I was able to get my S&W 617. Fact is, it was in pretty good shape, and it shot just fine. Fact is, I still keep it with me when out on the prairie with the magnum cylinder in it loaded with shotshells for them darn copper headed rattle moccasins.

If I were you though, I would simply buy bulk 22lr ammo from Wally-World at about $10 per 500-550. Just no sense in putting pricey ammo through these "paperweights" as my close bud likes to call them.

As for the rifling, chances are you are not going to see much in your gun, just as I cannot in my FIE either. Fact is, 22lr rifling is usually at 1 turn per 16" of barrel length, so looking into a short barrel of a revolver isn't going to show you much at all.

Anyhow, once again, welcome to the fun, shoot while you can, save up some bones, and once you get yourself a real nice plinker, you will never turn back I can assure you.

If you have a 'snubby' model, a 2" or 3" barrel isn't going to show 'spirals', but you should see some angle on the grooves...Most .22LR barrels have a twist rate of 1 turn in 16".

Yeah, the Rohm/RG arms are not of the top shelf class, but are shootables.

Mine wasn't shootable, it was dangerously out of time and the sear didn't catch on me once when I was cocking it and went bang. I was pointing downrange, but it was enough to swear me off the thing for good. It was totally inaccurate and out of time out of the box. Whadda POS. And people bad mouth Taurus??????
