romanian aks

uhh, when was the last time you've heard of a Romanian AK expolding Hokkmike? Why do you still have the other 2 Romy AK if you're so scared of it?

My WASR 10/63 has worked great from day one. Had it well over two years and wouldn't think of getting rid of it. All I've done to it besides cleaning is buy more magazines, a better sling and clean up the existing furniture then rub in tung oil. I know there are nicer AKs but this one has been 100% reliable and only cost $300. Cheap and reliable, that's the definition of an AK.

I personally have a converted Saiga 7.62x39...but I have fired the WASR-10/63 extensively and found it to be a decent gun.

I've also read a very good torture test done to the WASR and it performed admirably.

I have a SAR-1 I bought back in 2001 or 2002. I have only fired a few magazines through it. What is the whole "G" thing and what does the 10/63 mean? I had no idea there were this many variants to the Romanian AK....

I hads a Romak, and after much Dremel work on the mag well and the trigger group, it was a pretty good rifle. 100% reliable. I've since developed a Norinco fetish.

Every time Century makes a slight modification to the way they convert the rifles or make them US legal, they change the name.

The biggest improvement from the SAR's and WASR-10 to the WASR-10/63 is the US made tapco trigger, which eliminates trigger slap.

I also believe that the SAR's were made to accept double stack magazines originally, while the WASR's were built during the assault weapons ban to take only single stack magazines, then widened again stateside. Hence no dimples and the magazine wells that look like they were chiseled out by the drunken monkeys at Century. My 10/63 is a few years old... I'm not sure if the new production ones have the same milled out mag well.

I think the GP designation refers to the standard laminate wood stock.

'The "G" thing' comes from the rifle being issued to the Romanian Guards. These rifles were marked with a distinctive "G" on their rear sight blocks. They represent the majority of kits shipped over to us, and so are represented in most (re)manufacturers stables.

The "WASR-10/63" is so named to distinguish it from the original WASR-10.
The 10/63 has a bayonet lug and a threaded muzzle, while the original WASR-10 does not.

Count me in as a WASR 10/63 fan, too. My 10/63 side folder is a whole different animal from the old SARs, WUMs, and WASR 10s. It's noticeably heavier and more solid than my WASR 10. All my part numbers match, also. And best of all, with a scope and good ammo it benches at 2 MOA, which is incredible for an AK. I love mine so much I'm ordering two more thru my local dealer. JGSales currently has the wood furniture'd 10/63s at $399 which is an amazing deal, and $519 for the Tapco side folder with poly furniture. I'm going to use my current 10/63 as my long range gun (shoots 2 MOA as mentioned), set another up with an NCStar holo sight (love this sight on my WASR 10) for SHTF and 3 gun comps, and then keep the third as a spare. They're definitely a step or two up in quality from the WASR 10, and even the WASR 10 has improved quite a bit last year or so.

I own two Romanian rifles and must say they have always performed well and impressed - plus they'll eat anything you put in it.

Go for it.

WASR rifles are made from Romy Military rejected parts...GP1975 rifles are made of Romanian military rifle parts{trunnions, bolt, etc...} not rejects..and US parts...personally i LOVE my GP1975 but would never consider a WASR10.......just not into factory 2nds

GP in century rifles is a post ban term meaning General Purpose.. as in not assualt but more sport oriented...

This stopped being true a couple years ago.

WASRs are now made from former Romanian Army AKs (which are made of parts that didn't go in to the WASR).

My SAR1 is great. Trigger slap is not unique to Romanian guns and can be cured w/ a $30 aftermarket trigger group or literally 5 minutes with a dremel (what I did with mine).

I refinished both the metal and wood, very nice AK, great shooter. Much superior to any WASR I've ever handled. Shot noticeably better in back to back comparisons with my last MAK90, especially when the MAK90 got hot. I'm a believer in the theory of the chinese steel being cheap and that being the reason why they went with thicker receivers and barrels but that is arguable...

Got rid of my last MAK90 for an SAR2 that I wish I had kept, it was also a solid shooter.

Best deal going currently is the Saiga though. Converting mine to pistol grip config took all of 2 hours taking my time...

I have two, one in each caliber. I have owned them since 1999. They have ALWAYS gone bang when I pull the trigger. What more can you ask for? If you don't like them, DON'T BUY ONE........chris3

I have a wasr 10/63, love it. They are not for the kind of guy who will not / cannot tinker with it and figure out how it works. If you are a "Turn Key" I’m not screwing with it kind of guy (Or dont have the time/desire) then buy something more expensive that has all that done.

I think the best part is cleaning them up, finishing the wood, smoothing things out......I think I want another just talking about it. :D
