Well I guess this might as well be my first post. Technically my second, so my first thread.

So right now I'm looking at possibly getting a AK-47 type rifle. And so I search places like Gunbroker.com and Gunsamerica.com, and get many results.

At Gunbroker I see a lot of Romanian RPK's up for sale, generally bundled with a few mags, especially if the "Buy it Now!" feature. These are generally in the $500-600 range, and include anything from 4 40-rd mags to one which would include a 75-rd drum mag.

To perhaps my untrained eye, these sound like good deals. But I have no experience with foreign imports, so I don't know if this is something worth pursuing, or if I should just keep browsing.

Thanks in advance for any inputs.

They are very good rifles.

Classicarms has them with a 30 and 40 rd mag for $400, JGSales a tiny bit below that.

Read the posts here to find out where the good buys are research the rifle and the companies selling and compare prices before you buy.

Prices have jumped since January but you can still find competitive prices.

Classic Arms, Centerfire, R&R Arms, AIMS, are just a few companies that come to mind.

Classic Arms has got the AES-10B for $400. No reason to pay more. It's a great rifle, but not flawless. I'm not a big fan of the FCG that Century Arms installs, but it's serviceable.

Well you're paying more for extra magazines, and free shipping. Or having the shipping built into the price. For example, one package comes with a 75-round drum and free shipping if the buy it now feature is used. From what I've seen around various websites, that 75-round drum alone is easily $100, generally a bit more.

I saw that same deal on Gunbroker: $550 for the AES-10B + drum + shipping. Subtract ~$120 for the drum and $20 for the shipping and you now have the gun for $410, or ten bucks more than what Classic Arms charges to ship the gun with both a 30 and 40 round magazine. It's pretty much the same deal.

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread! I was about to ask about the Romanian AK as well. I saw one at a gun show this weekend for $450 and it had really pretty wood stock and forend. It was actually the first AK type gun I've ever even picked up so I passed on the deal because I didn't know anything about the quality or price. I've never been a fan of SKS guns and figured that the AK type were about the same thing, but this one I looked at really looked sharp. Are they really a good guy to buy or are they junk? Because for $400 or $500, I could buy a pretty nice looking bolt action rifle.

The Romanian AES-10B isn't bad for the money when you consider WASRs are getting to be the same price. I'm sure other people can chime in here but just make sure the sights are not canted and from experience, make sure the top cover fits while cycling the bolt. Also make sure its the B model with the heavy barrel.

I built my Yugo RPK for $250. The looks at the range are well worth the money! :D $450 at a gun show is fairly normal. Until you pay shipping and transfer you are at that price but ALWAYS haggle! The gun shows around here, I have seen Century Yugos for $500-550. Worth the money IMHO(little beefier) but the Romanian is fine too.
