Romanian Trainer Rifle problem

I have a 1969 Romanian Trainer rifle. I've never been able to get it to feed rounds from the magazine properly. They always get "hung up" in the process of going from the mag to the bore. I thought it was the mag, but I just got a brand new one and am still having this problem. I think I have figured out the problem, but don't know what the solution will be.

It appears that the firing pin (a long, flat "blade" that goes into a slot along one side of the bolt) is not retracting all the way while the bolt is being operated. This appears to be having the effect of blocking the upward movement of the rear of the 22 round as it is being stripped off the magazine on its way to the bore. This puts an angle on the round as it is being pushed towards the bore, and therefore it won't chamber. When I manually push the firing pin/blade all the way back, everything works fine. But the moment the round is ejected as the bolt is pulled back, the firing pin/blade stays out, blocking once again the smooth face of the bolt head and getting in the way again of the next round.

Any solution to this? Is there someone I could send the bolt to that could fix it? I have tried to disassemble the bolt but it is beyond my skills - it is VERY hard to even get past the first part of the process and I don't want to butcher the bolt.

Would love for someone to help me out here - would even be willing to pay. Or if you have a spare bolt lying around, I'd buy it if it works properly.

Actually, I fixed it! After I posted this I figured that maybe I could take out just the firing pin - looked like a small pin was holding it in, so I took a punch and started whacking at it. This apparently loosened the firing pin up enough so that now it isn't getting stuck - tested it out and it works great. So my ham-handed tactics finally paid off!

I also had this problem. I believe my dad fixed it by stoning an edge break on one of the firing pin surfaces. Rifle works perfectly now.

That solution would be specific to my bolt, though. Yours was probably screwed up differently.

Mine had that problem too. The catch that keeps the bolt from falling out also controls the location of the firing pin. On mine the spring that holds the catch in place was very week, so not only would I have problems feeding, but occasionally I would pull the bolt straight on out of the gun when I went to cycle. I replaced the spring and the problem seems to be gone.

The firing pin needs to move very freely in order for everything to work properly. There is probably some cosmoline hardened in the bolt that is gumming up the works--or perhaps a burr on the bolt or firing pin.

Damn, it is still doing it occasionally. I took the firing pin out. What would you suggest I use to clean the gunk off everything, and could I also do something to the flat surfaces of the firing pin that would "hone it" down some?

Both of mine do it, too. I cleaned and polished everything I could reach and they still do it occasionally.

My solution? Remove the magazine. It's a very nice single shot, and the mag well makes a lovely ejection port.

I'm glad you didn't take the childish advice of some on this thread. I had a similar issue with my M69 but I bought new mags for it and it is super smooth. It shoots under 2 inches at 100 yards and it functions smooth as can be. I like it a lot.

I bought 3 of these 8 + years ago. Great shooter very accurate!!! They are VERY picky on ammo. They Feed FLAWLESSLY with copper plated round nose ammo. None of them will feed with hollow points, and have issues with non copper plated round nose ammo. So if you are going to shoot with out frustration use good quality COPPER PLATED ROUND NOSE AMMO!!
